People commenting on this song should really take another look at the lyrics. The 2nd verse says "...I see you've got your fist out, say your piece and get it out..." That's FIST, not list. I suspect Mr. Hunter may have been referring to a form or protest, as in thrusting out your fist and shaking it dramatically... |

| Elton John – Sad Songs (Say So Much) Lyrics

This one of the few songs in the world that requires no explanation. I sometimes get the impression it might have been written with a bit of sarcasm.
However, I take it at face value. This song is what music is supposed to be about - not so much the sadness, but the emotional impact music has on us. |

This is easily one of Elton's most powerful and yet underrated songs. If you ever get the chance, give a listen to Bruce Hornsby's interpretation of it on the Elton/Bernie Tribute album "Two Rooms".
At this point, the meaning for me is rather abstract...I agree with what one person said about the song being autobiographical. I also think that the person (Suzy34) who mentioned it was about Bernie's wife and in-laws driving him crazy. They may both be right. They may both be wrong too. Hard to say. I also agree with Suzy about the song blowing me away. Its is easily his most intense and darkest piece of all. |
