This song is an ancient murder ballad. Its origins are unknown but it was first released as a recording in the 1920s I believe, then Bob Dylan performed it in 1961. No one has covered this song since the 60s un OR. Okkervil River adapted its version closely after the original but there are slight differences. |

I thought it was, "This one's for many, this one's for some", though the lyrics above make sense because he references Maggie again in this album. In fact there are several motifs I've found in this album--leopards, actors, and Maggie. Because every song on the album flows together, I feel like the whole thing is telling a story. Any ideas? |

I always imagined it as being spelled out, "Best friend of L-O-D-I"...or maybe Elle O-D-I. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't he mention an Eleanor in several other songs?
