33 was the age of Jesus at the time of his crucifixion. I believe that's the reference, but I don't think the song is about Christianity or the life of Jesus.
Maybe it's about someone who turned 33 and has too much fear in their lives; they are not living life to the fullest. In comparison, one could see how much Jesus accomplished in his 33 years. "Open your arms" is asking the subject to be vulnerable, whether "it's gonna hurt you" or not. It also could mean you should be open to criticism and not care if other people think you're wrong.
The "snake" is a sign of deceit in the bible (such as the snake in the Garden of Eden), so there might be an implication that deceit/sinfulness is coming unless the subject opens up. |

Is this about sex, drugs, and rock n' roll?
The imagery is of passionate, carnal feelings...beating hearts and dilated pupils... I also sense a lot of loneliness in the phrase "please don't come 'round here, no" as if this is his beastly side he doesn't want anyone to see. |

I had to look up the phrase "on the lam" (ex. Butch and his gang are on the lam)... it means "on the loose, at large, on the run, escaped, fugitive, in flight" |
