You can also read this song as a prayer for the Second Coming. The Bible ends with the same kind of fervent prayer: "Come, Lord Jesus!" (Revelation 22:20) |

I agree with many of the other comments above defending the judicious use of profanity (F-word) in this song. I am a Christian who dislikes profanity in general and tries not to use it much. However, I believe that sometimes, such as in this case, the careful and selective use of profanity can be both legitimate and extremely effective for artistic expression. I can't imagine any substitue lyric for this line of the song that could capture so succinctly and intensely the Truth about this fallen world we live in. It is exceptionally powerful, both as a lyric and in the way Bono sings it. Why is this line so powerful? Why does it stop you dead in your tracks and demand your attention? Because it rings absolutely true and you know it. You feel the truth of it in your gut. (And, as others have already pointed out, this truth is biblical.) |

This is one of my favorite U2 songs. First time I heard it, I just liked the sound of it. 2nd time, I actually paid attention to the words and was a little shocked. I thought uh, oh, is Bono committing blasphemy by calling Jesus, the resurrected, living Son of God, a Dead Man? But I quickly realized that the tone is not one of blasphemous dis-avowel of the resurrection at all, but rather a sincere, heartfelt cry to Jesus to SHOW himself to be alive. The tone of the plea, especially in the context of the rest of the lyrics, seems to say, "It FEELS to me like you're dead, Jesus, still buried in the tomb, even though I know you're actually resurrected and alive." There is a disconnect between what the speaker thinks with his mind and what he feels in his heart, a disconnect which is familiar to many Christians as they struggle to develop a stronger faith. This is one of the most poignant and HONEST songs I've ever heard. Excellent. |
