this song is deeply romantic. even if it's full of teenage sex drive. "I'll dream about you, I will not doubt you with the passing of time" makes me smile every time. |

muse. my favorite. muse can put so much emotion behind their music and lyrics, even if it is just vocals and a guitar(as clearly shown in this piece). my personal interpretation? I think it’s about a love song-- or rather, about someone he(not necessarily matt) COULD have loved, had he given it a chance. “Draw another picture Of the life you could have had Follow your instincts And choose the other path” this is the classic “what it could have been” phrase(but, of course, much more poetic). “You should never be afraid You're protected from trouble and pain Why, why is this a crisis in your eyes again” here, we see that he “chose the other path” because he is afraid to love(as in, the “crisis” he refers to is being presented with the opportunity to love). “I will take the cold for you” possibly, he doesn’t think he’s worthy of her? or that she deserves better than to try to help him love, when he’s afraid of his own emotions and can’t guarantee her happiness. this is a sacrifice: his happiness for hers with someone else. the simplest, yet most poetic stanza in this song. “And i've had recurring nightmares That I was loved for who I am And missed the opportunity To be a better man” this is obvious. he missed the chance to love, but(as seen in the first stanza) “followed his instincts and chose the other path”. |
