Chris Rice – Sometimes Love Lyrics 18 years ago
to me it means, that the love we all see now is selfish, superficial. he's saying that real love, perfect love, is sacrifice. the "drive a nail into it's own hand" is referring to Jesus on calvary, being nailed to a cross. it was love that drove Him to do that. love for you, me, all of us.

Modest Mouse – Ocean Breathes Salty Lyrics 18 years ago
i like to think this song is about two people, who were special to each other but one of them was into a religion. the writer views this a a waste of life "you wasted life" and that the other missed out on life. one instance, it seems the writer is asking if the other's ever breathed in salty air, carried it in their head, heart and soul. as if the writer thought the other had ever slowed down enough to enjoy life and breathe in the ocean air, always too busy and too occupied with rules and following them. "tell me what you saw and i'll tell you what you missed when the ocean met the sky the writer also mentions an afterlife, maybe after they both die they'll live again and hopes the other won't waste their afterlife with religion, but seems rather doubtful ["why wouldn't you waste death?" death meaning the afterlife obviously]. the writer hopes that the other'll come around "and maybe [they'll] get lucky and [they'll] both grow old" [together]. however, this line makes more since with Jacob Emery's comment about suicide...

either way or neither way, this song is wonderful. pretty much all of modest mouse's stuff is amazing.
