Guster – The Captain Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok, here's another take on "The Captain". I think it's a tongue in cheek song about the clear, black and white decisions enspoused by hollywood of the 60's / 70's.

It may be just a funny look at "The Captain" from Star Trek. Every decision is simple for him. You just "face forward, move slow, forge ahead". And he is always right, and always wins in the end.

Just MHO.

Guster – The Captain Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm surprized by the likes of V Snizzle, who try to tie President Bush hating into everything they hear. There are some that are suffering from Bush Hate Syndrome. They are still upset that their enlightened Al-Gore wasn't able to steal the election, and they've been against Bush and everything he does (right or wrong) ever since the 2000 elections.

Can't we just keep that perspective out of every song we think about?

The National – All Dolled-Up in Straps Lyrics 18 years ago
I think there is a deeper/darker meaning to this song.
The main character is obsessed with the woman, and may have been stalking her.
There are several clues to the depth of the obsession..he relates several sightings of her and that his "head plays it over and over".
When he throws out "don't interrupt me" several times, it made me think there might be more to the "dolled up in straps / all colored in" phrase.
Perhaps he's insanely jelous and obsessed, and has actually kidnapped her. He then tells her of seeing her several times, admonishes her to not interrupt her. He points out that she is all dolled up in straps, all colored in, and asks where she's been. Perhaps she is bound up with straps, beaten or tortured in some way (all colored in?), while he questions where she has been, and tells her not to interrupt her.
This may be a very dark song indeed!

The National – Green Gloves Lyrics 18 years ago
My take is more literal than others. I see the author as being twisted (perverted?) and disowned/cast out by his friends, he has a twisted desire to exact some sort of revenge.

In order to know them better, he sneaks into one of their homes while they are all out getting wasted, he "hope they’re staying glued together" so one doesn't return to the home he's invaded prematurely.

The author secretly goes through their stuff, using green gloves I'd guess to inhibit fingerprints/germs.

"watch their videos, in their chairs.
Get inside their beds
with my green gloves
Get inside their heads, love their loves."

Getting inside their heads and loving their loves, could be reading diaries/email/love letters, pretending it was his life.

Perhaps exacting revenge is his knowing their secrets without their knowledge?

Very powerful lyrics. I just discovered The National, and only have Alligator and Boxer, but really enjoy the music and lyrics. Is their earlier stuff just as good?
