I feel that this song is referring to a state of hopelessness. It seems to refer to a time in which he was neither moving forward nor backward in life (hence the line: "So we hit the doldrums now, sails hanging loose on the lines," and "And we couldn't sink or swim, just praying for a merciful tide." Pyke also seems to be talking about those times you make plans, only to have them changed completely "Ain't it funny how, when you think that you've got it all figured out, that these things sometimes seem organised well in advance of me, or the callings of my heart." I dunno... I think I'm just starting to ramble... Either way, its an amazing song... |
