Somehow, I'm always speechless when I've heard this song. I can't say what it's about, but soul. The way it is sung, the way you can feel your skin crawl when you listen to it; this is by far my favourite song. When I need to relax, I'll turn this on, lie down on my bed and listen. Sometimes I end up with tears on my cheeks, as the song says something that I cannot express in words. That's art - when art does something, that words cannot rationally explain, when art touches you in on a fundamental level and you cannot do anything, but bask in it's glory. I can't explain the song, I believe it means something different to whoever hears it. |

Somehow, I believe that the "drugs" parts that has already been mentioned is right in a way; that it's about John (!) being on drugs, doing what he wanted to do. Then we hear the more abstract part, which should (in my life) be applied to everything. "All paths divide" and down; life is being lived constantly, by billions of different and unique people. The names are a metaphor for souls and uniqueness. We all have different goals and motivations, different loves and different pasts; no human is two - "Every cry is a separate emotion". Really, I think this about being yourself, doing what you think is right and respecting that others are different. Life is what you make of it, and life can never be any more than what you find within yourself. That's my take on it, at least in a bit of a shortened version. As always, the songs says everything better than me! |

| John Frusciante – Regret Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Yakop: I think you're completely right! Somehow it doesn't sit well with me, that John would regret his past. He usually says, that it was something that he wanted, something that he learned from and something that was him - why should he regret that? Really, I think that's the beauty of this song - you can interpret it as you want; maybe you want the literally version, sometimes you want the sarcastic version. The sarcastic version is the right version... for me. It cannot be anything more |
