the talk about this song being about drugs reminds me of a similar thing with joy division. everyone assumes that jd's songs are about ian curtis' impending suicide. granted, many of them are, just like many of elliott's songs are about drugs, but its unfair to jump to conclusions without any basis other than a stereotype. i dont see any reason why ERMOH refers to drugs. at the time that he wrote this I believe he was still into heroin. its not until later, around basement on a hill, that he speaks of drugs as something well in the past (a fond farewell). throughout this period in his music he refers to drugs as kind've a sad relief in his life. in this case the subject of his attention is something he's lost and misses. The "sermon" line is just a very general reference toward being lectured. This could equally be about drugs or about his sadness (staring into space, crying) but, in the context of the song, it's clearly about a lost love. ...... One of the most beautiful and genuine songs ever written. Why are you staring into outer space, crying? Just because you came across it, and lost it At this point in his life he still had drugs, and the option of doing them. He didn't lose them. However, he did go through a lot've romances and is either referring to a specific person or the feeling in general. |

| Joy Division – Ice Age Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| IMO ian relating the cold war era to how he felt in life (freezing in an emotional cold). a great metaphor, curtis is one of the best lyricists to ever live | |
| Elliott Smith – A Fond Farewell Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| its funny, for over a year i thought this song was about suicide (a fond farewell to his fans and friends) but then i realized that its a farewell to his old lifestyle/drugs. its hard to figure it out at first because most people would never think of a hardcore drug as a friend but a positive outlook on drugs is a common theme throughout elliotts music | |

IMO: The first stanza refers to his looking for the happiness of his youth. "In a room with a window / In the corner I found truth" refers to finding happiness through ignorance. Stanza 2 reminds me of how he could've felt wile performing on stage. Especially right before his suicide. Stanza 3 just refers to how the happiness of his youth (mainly love/innocence) has been corrupted. |

| Snowden – Anti Anti Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| IMO this song is about a man who is in love with a girl but is too jaded to do anything about it, and when he finds distractions he ignorantly accepts them because otherwise he's miserable about the situation | |

does anyone notice that this parallel's bradbury's fahrenheit 451? ive known this song for years and that's always been my impression. "I wrapped you inside my coat / When they came to firebomb the house" Montag, the protagonist, is a fireman and wears a fireman's jacket, his coworkers firebomb houses. "A beautiful girl can turn your world into dust" After montag meets this beautiful and mysterious girl his life changes. She disappears but her presence affects him throughout the rest of the novel. Overall its the tone of the song w/ those references + yorke being very literate and all. 1984 which inspired many radiohead songs is also a dystopian novel. |
