No way to be sure on my theory, but I think this song might have something to do with Courtney's stint as a stripper in Alaska (Northern Lights, Northern Star, pines etc.). During her time in Alaska she was in a very bitter relationship with Rozz Rezabeck, which, combined perhaps with Kurt, likely inspired the song. A great song that I'll never forget hearing for my first time.

Just wanted to clear up the "When they get what they want/ They never want it again" issue. In Courtney Love: Queen of Noise by Melissa Rossi pg. 47:
"Finally, simply to stop her whining, he did, asking in the letter, 'When you get what you want, will you ever want it again?'"
The "He" involved is named Rozz Rezabeck-Wright, an on/off boyfriend of Courtney's during the 80s.
Anyhow, a great song that uses the soft/loud balance really well.

I heard that Depeche Mode originally wrote this song based on a line from a book on Elvis in which Priscilla refers to Elvis as her "Personal Jesus". I believe it was called "Elvis and I" but i'm far from quotable on that. I think Manson interpreted the song as trying to find something to believe in. The sounds of the dogs barking and the chainlink fence at the beginning remind me of a ghetto. So I see it like a nobody's trying to find some solace and a reason to believe in something, not even a deity but just someone kind. I guess Manson must be kind of challenging morals by getting people to look at what they believe in (Showing presidents etc.) and re-evaluating who their personal jesus is. |

I think this song is about someone mourning an individual who took their own life, and now they're wishing that they could've saved that person by "Swapping places". In the mourner's mind, if only htey could make a deal with God to swap, they would reverse the deceased's downward spiral ie. instead or going downhill "Be running up that hill". As far as the road thing goes, I'd say it's a metaphor for mental detachment by going down the road from your problems, and finally, running up that building is obviously reversing a suicide. Stealing the moment is about wishing that you could take the burden from the dead guy. the fist verse is saying that although they aren't physically hurt, they are mentally by the loss, and wanting to make a divine deal. Second is talking about the impact and how the mourner begins to take on the characteristics of depression the dead guy had and how ironic it really is, as well as feeling like they hated the person who killed themself for leaving them. Just my view. Cheers. |

So, here's my theory. Shadows, the insides of cupboards, walking home at night, all dark right? When you look at a shadow, it looks like blue light being shone down. I think that he finds darkness and lonliness to be familiar to him, so he uses it as a compliment when he says "You are the bluest light", because although he found comfort in her, he felt lonely after she left, so it works as both a term to describe familiarity and abandonment. Just my awkward, incoherent take on it. |

To me I think the chorus lines refer to the same thing, as in :But I'm not a slave to a god
that doesn't exist

He doesn't believe in a God, because he believes that humans created God. So, god is created by the world. The same world that is always trying to downplay individual beauty with us. That means that God, like the rest of the world, doesn't give a shit. Manson believes that Christianityis an institution that is trying to produce sheeple. Agree or disagree, that's my thoughts. I dunno about the whole medicine thing, but I always percieved it as that horrible feeling of not being happy, but not sad, not knowing where the fuck you're going in life, and basically just being lost. Seems to me he tries to figure out what to do, and he tries religion, medicine, and finds our death is what is for him. Semms slightly foreshadowing of Kurt, at least to me. |

i definitely agree with bfk, but one point that i haven't seen is that it seems they are reffering to a period (Pissing blood for 7 days) but yeah i think it's like when kids are in shit so they are rebelling. I love this song, because, to me it is sorta like a transition from the cool vibe they had to the horror punk sound they adopted later on. |

I sorta think this is the every kid's song. When Nirvana had their breakthrough, Smells like Teen Spirit, they were thought by most to be 1 hit wonders. But the kids that actually listened to the whole disc were probably melancholy just with some of the subject matter of the songs. i see this as those kid's feelings set to a cello. They felt something was in the way and that there has got to be more to the world. i know this cuz i was one of those kids. i think the bridge is a metaphor for the feeling of being set back and in the ditch, between a rock and a hard place. cheers |

He is also undoing everything (Open all the seven seals). I'm not religious so i tend to steer clear of biblical stuff but that's off my little religious knowledge so there you go. the first time i heard this song i was like 8 and my mom went "Oh this sounds so sad and boring" and changed the channel. I'm older now and I am in love with it because to me it seems like he isn't speaking of physical distance, but social or emotional. To an extent, this theory is based on my own experiences though. I like this guy and i don't know if he likes me back and it makes me angry so i will always say that i don't like him, but then there are times that he really seems to be interested in me and i want to be around him. This song really holds meaning.Love it. |

My interpretation of this song is that it is something that sad or depressed people can listen to and realize that they are not alone. As with the likes of Nirvana, Marilyn Manson and the Cure. I am NOT saying that HIM resembles them, but they show the other side of things, which is precisely why they get blamed by media reporters. When someone like myself hears pop artists on about "love is the most sugary sweet thing ever", they can't feel the song because it doesn't relate to how they feel. OK, at the end of the day, nobody cares what HIM stands for, unless you are some kind of obsessed fan. It is meant to be very open ended in meaning, so that you create one that is unique to you. When you compare that to how Ville acts, it makes sense. They are also non satanists, but what does your POV on a series of unproved stories have to do with anything? If you want to walk along saying "HIM are all satanists becuase they wear black clothes" you should just say that anyone who's ever dressed black for a funeral is satanist as well. As for the Heartagram, the background story as in revolver was that it was an idea that struck ville on his 20th birthday with no rhyme or reason. As for the song, i love it sooo much, becuase I like the original version, but the intro sounds like elevator music and it turns me away from the song lol.

I personally love it because it speaks to kids who have a hard time speaking to somebody they like. The boy in the song obviously thinks that the girl is meant for anybody but him (I know you're not dressed to impress me), but i love this song anyhow. |

to me, this song is kinda just about Glenn caring enough about someone that when they are in a dangerous or stressful situation (Hence the screaming thing), he wants to go through it with you. At times, I almost interpret it as he wants to look out for you and understand you, and, as previously stated, probably bone you (@ least if you're a chick lol).
