Rated 0 i think it rather obvious it is about George Bush. basically how we was able to do some much with his power and instead of good things, he has done so many terrible things. he, being a Christian, will not be recognized by St. Peter when he comes to the gates of heaven. there are times when the song might seem about Jesus, but I think it is really about Bush and all the ills he has caused the world. "a puppet on a string".

I realize this site is about interpreting song meanings but..................

No it's not obvious. What the hell do you know about whether George Bush will go to heaven? I suspect probably about as much as you know about Bush or current affairs. Geez...now we're making comparisons to Hitler? It's actually quite insulting to the horror that was Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany. For political reasons, this man has been vilified. And what did he do? He deposed a mass murderer named Saddam Husein and now the country is on the verge of being a sucessful Democracy. Amazing how easily manipulated people are. I know it's been an eternity, but try to keep up....First 9/11 happened. Hussein had long been thought to have weapons of mass destruction or at the very least a program for them. The US demanded he live up to the terms of his surrender from the first Gulf War (1990) which stated weapons inspectors would have unfettered access. Bush gave him an ultimatum that he allow the inspectors in or face miliary repercussions because that was the terms of the cease-fire. Saddam refuses and his military is defeated within days. In the subsequent years insurgent attacks occured and it's is widely agreed Bush's military strategy was ill conceived. However, in the last couple of years almost all violence has ceased. The US and Irag are now on friendly terms and the setting of a withdrawl date is eminent.

Of course few of the facts matter to many brainwashed dults who have swallowed this ridiculous narative over the years. Remember 9/11?!! The US was attacked in the most spectacular fashion losing thousands of lives as well as billions of dollars in property. This guy had spit in this county's face for years and it was time to pay the tab. Most in the US wanted the message sent that if you cross us you will be decimated. Do you remember what happened? They freaking flew planes into buildings!!! But yes, George Bush is an evil man who will be judged harshly by St. Peter. It just amazes me that you can write that with a straight face. Just because you disagree with somebody policies doesn't automatically make them evil. The fact is if a Democrat we're the President when 9/11 happened we still would have went into Iraq and you wouldn't be spouting this garbage about Bush being Hitler. What were we going to do? Let people fly planes into buildings and let countries not abide by the terms of their surrender? That in of itself is an act of war...that is not abiding by the terms of a surrender. By the way what ills has Bush caused you? For that matter what are the many ills the world has been caused because of big bad Bush? You'd think some perspective would be shown. Hussein murdered probably millions, but no more. And now seeing the way this myth about Bush being some evil person has spread nobody is willing to do what's necessary to prevent Iran from having WMD's. Good work. You guys will be the one's us sane people thank when that mushroom cloud goes up in Manhattan. You'll be screaming for somebody like Bush then!

"Why didn't we stop them from getting those weapons when we had the chance?"

God if I hear people saying this when the inevitable happens I'm going to slap them.

This song makes great use of using words in the literal and figurative at the same time, and then having the two different meanings convey meaning that fits in perfectly with the message of the song.

This song was also used at the end of the movie called "Mol Flanders". I think it was back '96 or '97 and it starred the woman who played the princess in "The Princess Bride". I believe she's also married to Sean Penn, but I can't remember her name!

David Bowie – Ashes to Ashes Lyrics 18 years ago
Obviously drug addiction is what the song is most likely about. However, as a former heroin addict, I don't think he's talking about heorin in this case. He talks about wanting to come down right now which seems to suggest some sort of hallucenagin or maybe anphetamines. Contrary to many weird beliefs about heroin (which is just a powerful pain killer or opiate), you don't hallucenate on it. What's more nobody on heroin would ever want to come down. It's a really mellow calming effect you get that's just very pleasurable. The fact that he is crying out that he want's to come down right now doesn't really go with high heroin produces. It's seems to be in tune with a bad trip on a hallucenagin or maybe a paranoid episode with anphetamines after being up for days. I know I sound like mr. junkie at preaching the positives of heroin, but that's what makes it so seductive. The shit part about the drug is that once you're hooked you can hardly live without it. You go into withdrawls and then after those are over you feel depressed for months because your brain doesn't produce enough dopamine or endorphines (natural chemicals in the brain the give the feeling of euphoria) because it's used to the drug doing it for you. The fact is, unless you take too much and overdose you just feel like you had great sex, got a job promotion, won a competition, etc. Apologies for going on and on, but I just feel opiate drugs are by far the most misunderstood and is usually portayed in "say no to drugs" movies and messages as this drug that you just go crazy and start freaking out when it couldn't be anything futher. Any heroine addict (former or otherwise) will tell you that the danger of heroin is not in the feeling it gives you at the time...any person would enjoy that feeling....the danger is in the fact that you can't feel happy without once you're are hooked, and therefore you're dependent on it. The freaking out comes when you're off the drug and feel terrible without it.

Jon Brion – Meaningless Lyrics 18 years ago
I almost forgot. I go to see Jon play regularly at a club in L.A. called Largo and he seems to have changed his mind about one of the lines of the song. For the past 3 or 4 years or so he always sings the line "then I left you" as "then you left me". Also, about half the time he sings the line "time went rolling be" as "time went crawling by". Isn't that great. It really could be either one. Years later it feels like time rolled by, but in the months just after the hurt time does "crawl" by. I just really like the fact that he changes that lyric from time to time. And like I said he always sings "then you left me" instead of "then I left you". I can see why he likes it better. When I first heard this song and I knew nothing about Jon Brion I remember liking it, but as listened to over and over again I didn't think the "then I left you" made sense. If he feels so horrible without her why did he leave her? I think Jon must have been thinking the same thing after he released it. Being too late, however, there was nothing he could do about and therefore sings the new lyric when he performs it live.

Jon Brion – Meaningless Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm surprised nobody has commented on this song. Maybe it's because the lyrics are fairly straight forward. Anyway, it may be easy to figure out, but i love lyric. I really identified with it. I've had my heart broken a few times, and I felt the same way. In the weeks and months after I'd drive by a place or a sign that she had pointed at once years ago, and it would just make me so sad...and all it really is is a street sign! The last chorus he tries to convey this fact (and trick himself into believing) by changing "precious places" and "special things" to "stupid places" and "silly things". I just love that.
