The Flys – Got You (where I Want You) Lyrics 17 years ago
I saw the interview you mentioned Foggs, but your telling the story wrong. It is one of the band members himself who is trying to pick up the girl but she wont give him the time of day. He is embarrassing himself and another band member comes up to him and tries to save him, but he says to him, Ive got her right where I want her. Its not about being shy, its about actually having the guts to talk to the girl and face rejection.

no, its has nothing to do with jail. it is about lossing his wife in divorece and now he is sitting in the bar drinking himself to death wondering where it all went wrong and blaming himself for it.

They Might Be Giants – We Want A Rock Lyrics 18 years ago
Although I think you can make the argument for the Fad Idea, I think that is a shallow interpretation. I think that the rocks and foreheads are merely representations of childish toys and silly things. “Throw the crib door wide,” is an invitation to childish behavior. The song is about holding on to the spirit of childhood. “Someone in this town wants to burn the playhouse down,” they want to stop free spirited and freethinking people and want those people to grow up. The ones who want a rock to wind a string around are the ideal not the enemy, as is the case in the fad interpretation.

I think, ApathyAndExhaustion, that your question is completely ridiculous. Yes, I believe that if the writer does not intend to make a biblical allusion then there is no allusion. That seems like you are making the argument for accidental depth and accidental intelligence. If an author did not intend for a piece to mean something then it does not mean that. That is like saying that Blues Traveler’s song Hook is about fly-fishing simply because it has the word hook. Alternatively, that because someone mentions a flood that it is an allusion to the biblical flood and that the song then somehow relates to God's divine plan fro the redemption of his people. That is simply not the case, especially if the person writing the song has not read the Bible. I have to say that your question, "Is the creator of a work in any better position to tell us what it "means" than anyone else?", is the most dim-witted thing I have ever heard. If your argument were correct Regina could take, a poetry class is a university, write an analysis of what she believes the song to mean and get an F, provided the professor had drawn some ridiculous meaning of his own. After all, Regina is in no better position to tell us what her song means than anyone else according to your mindless argument. That is preposterous. I am unfamiliar with Roland Barthes, witch I by the way I think you mean “Barth,” but if his teachings match even in iota of the garbage that you are spewing, I will stay as far away as possible for fear that his stupidity might be contagious.

When a person writes a song, it has the meaning that the writer intended it to have, no other. I get very tired of people trying to put their own feelings into a song. It does not mean different things to different people. There are an infinite number of incorrect interpretations, but there is only one correct interpretation. Stop trying to make the song what you want it to mean and start understanding what it actually does mean

Dixon, I am not pissed about the time, but about the comments that are made. In response to your comment about my grammar, I can admit that in my haste to post, I did make some grammatical errors, but let us not forget the importance of the post is the content, not the form. I have read several essays that were flawless grammatically and had absolutely nothing to say. I will apologize for the insults, but music is my passion and I cannot stand to see ignorant people take a dump on such a unique and fresh musician as Regina by misquoting her and not understanding her and still claiming to be her fans. Moreover, I will have you know that this post received a Flesch-Kincaid grade level of 13.5 for its readability and grammatical correctness as opposed to your post, which received a mere 7.3.

ok guys, im pretty pissed cause I had to make an account to correct all your missconceptions. Kentucky is the ship, USS Kentucky, They are "atop a giant puddle huddeled with their missiles" sailors on the uss kentucky sailing across the ocean and they miss the girls back home. Maryann could be a girl who is a bitch who doesn't put out. She is a tease. Or it could be a reference to a steppinwolf song Huricane Maryanne, it would certainly go with the nauticle theme. Who the heck thout it was I taught this giant bottle, thats just retarted, i dont think your smart enought to like regina spektor. and its not i should have been with the state, its "it should have been another state" between 1891 and 1903 all first calss battelships were named for states and were not alowed to be named for anything else until all states names were used.
