So, I just bought the CD I haven’t listened to every single song completely yet, but this one caught my attention and I think I finally figured it out. "Age 5. Just a little boy shy Is he ready for the big surprise? He'll be playing lego in a dream when the shadows come to life." -this part is most likely about sexual abuse on a child, 'howard' is sleeping...the legos represent the innocence in a 5-year-old child...his father walks in and sexually abuses him. "Age 9. And he should've been fine with a secret he's sure to keep. Two times had to tell a little lie for the sake of him and me." -four years later and he still hasn't told anyone about his abusive father. not sure what "two times had to tell a litte lie" means, but "for the sake of him and me" was howard keeping his secret from the song writer in order to maintain a friendship. -the chorus seems to suggest that the father continuously abused the child and even got him stoned, and that his mother knew about it but did nothing and told him not to talk about it. "16 and the woman down the street has invited him to come inside. It was the first time It didn't feel right. It'll be the last time he tries." -the beginning of his sexual confusion "17 all he's ever seen is living between the lies. It's kind of funny how a mind can keep living in denial" -the teenager has grown up basically knowing nothing but lies "18 is a very strange scene, he's still playing with the past. Expelled. Maybe someone could've helped If someone had known to ask." -18 is confusing enough, and he still thinks about what had been done to him in the past, and because he felt he couldn't tell anyone about it, he was waiting for someone to ask and no one cared enough to. "19 and he's innocently parked right beside a school. He stares at a boy sitting there and the boy stares at him too. He walkes over He needs closure." -parks near a school, notices another boy looking at him [im assuming the boy seemed gay or something] and 'howard' decides to walk over and probably ask him out to see if he is really gay or not |
