| Rod Stewart – Sailing Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I never heard Rod Stewart’s version of this song, but was fortunate enough to hear Axl Rose’s acoustic version from a UK club appearance last year (it is available on Youtube) and it blew me away. It is such a passionate song. | |
| Corinne Bailey Rae – Like a Star Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I recently heard this song for the first time on a friend’s myspace page and instantaneously fell in love with it. It is a truly stunning work. My interpretation is the realization of a sudden blossoming relationship and how it came to fruition totally out of the blue. Like others have suggested, it doesn’t necessarily have to be between a man and a woman, but it definitely implies that someone is being fulfilled by something or someone they never saw coming. Beautiful. | |
| Nine Inch Nails – Piggy Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Another great example of Trent putting his anguish into words. I interpret this song as Trent speaking to a lover that left him, irrevocably hurting him. “hey pig yeah you hey pig piggy pig pig pig all of my fears came true” He is simply addressing the person that hurt him and saying how what he had hoped would never happen, has happened. “black and blue and broken bones you left me here all alone my little piggy needed something new” He is saying here I am in all this pain after you betrayed/left me. She left him for someone she met. “nothing can stop me now 'cause I don't care anymore nothing can stop me now 'cause I don't care nothing can stop me now 'cause I don't care anymore nothing can stop me now 'cause I just don't care” It is unknown that he is going to do (move on, kill her, lift weights, etc…), but her decision making provided the fuel he needed to fulfill his determination. “hey pig nothing's turning out the way I planned” His future plans involved her, but she had other plans. “hey pig there's a lot of things I hoped you could help me understand” He is lost without her. “what am I supposed to do? I lost my shit because of you” Not only is he lost, but he gave up all he had (friends, time, etc..) and has nothing to show for it |

| Nine Inch Nails – The Great Below Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This is probably my second favorite NIN song (just behind “Something I Can Never Have”). In this song, Reznor contrasts his almost dead relationship with the uncertainty and unpredictability of the ocean. “staring at the sea will she come? is there hope for me after all is said and done anything at any price all of this for you all the spoils of a wasted life all of this for you” In this first verse, Reznor is uncertain if she will ever return to him, even though he is willing to sacrifice any part of her existence for her. “all the world has closed her eyes tired faith all worn and thin for all we could have done and all that could have been” Reznor is referencing his broken will and the loss of the life they could have had together had she not left. “ocean pulls me close and whispers in my ear the destiny I've chose all becoming clear the currents have their say the time is drawing near washes me away makes me disappear” These lines confuse me. I think the ocean represents life and how they have been torn apart. Now he is in a different life (maybe he moved, or a whole new career, etc…). Whatever it is that overtakes him, he is no longer where he was when he was with her. “I descend from grace in arms of undertow I will take my place in the great below” Reznor finally takes the plunge into his new world, where he will forever be away from her. “I can still feel you even so far away” The most beautiful ending spells out how even though they have no relationship anymore, he can still feel her in his heart. |

| Marilyn Manson – Evidence Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I agree that this song is the best one on “Eat Me Drink Me” and might be my favorite Manson song of all-time. There is just something extremely sexy about this song and the way he describes the female (who I presume to be Evan). Vocally, this is Manson at his best and I pray he plays this one live. | |
| Nine Inch Nails – Something I Can Never Have Lyrics | 18 years ago |

This is, by far, my favorite song of all-time. An absolute masterpiece from top to bottom, no one can convey the raw and brutal feelings of emptiness/heartbreak like Trent Reznor does in his lyrics. I interpret this song as a feeling of a love lost and the irrevocable pain that follows it. “everywhere I look you’re all I see… just a fading fucking reminder of who I use to be” He isn’t over her and likely never will be. She has just moved on but he is stuck looking at the past, only able to remember how he was fulfilled when he was with her. Fans of this song should definitely listen to the version of it released on the “Still” album. It is simply Trent signing while playing the piano. It is beautiful in every sense. Also, if you check youtube, you can see a version of this song performed by Trent and Danny Lohner in his living room. Fans of this NIN song will also likely enjoy “The Great Below”, “Hurt”, “Beside You in Time”, and “Right Where it Belongs” |
