yeah i agree with "The Moo." did you also notice the line "Elephant in your brain
Reminding you you've got to make a choice" also refers to another Salinger story? have you read "Teddy" from his book of short stories?also about a young boy, he talks about how an elephant is only big because we were taught that it is.if we weren't taught this, the elephant could've been anything we wanted. "Teddy" is one of his best stories! |

nn1000 I totally agree.and i think i've figured out the last line.maybe.It's not sexual at all.it's a metaphor.it's so hard for me to explain these things but i'll try anyway.i think that throughout life we're told by parents and religion that if we think dirty thoughts we'll go to hell.I think he's trying to express that these "Big Ideas"(hopes) are so ludicrous that they are possibly some of the worse thoughts you could have.does that make sense? It's so pessimistic.this song reminds me a little of that line from Paranoid Android. when he says "ambition makes you look pretty ugly" I love that line! |

| The Doors – People Are Strange Lyrics

confinedinsanity that's exactly what i was thinking.yesterday i was listening to it and all of a sudden it hit me. this song is about depression.i think when he says "when you're strange" it's more like what he feels about himself, rather than what other people see. he is completely trapped in this paranoia and depression. "women seem wicked" i think refers to the paranoia. paranoid people are always suspicious of other people's motives. he thinks he is strange, and that nobody likes him."the streets are uneven when your down"well duh.what is being down?depression. he doesnt see things as they really are. everything is sort of askew.even the streets.that's what depression is.a distorted reality.the faces coming out of the rain i think also refers to the paranoia. just a thought. |

| The Killers – When You Were Young Lyrics

wow! so many comments I couldn't read them all. Ok my interpretation is kinda out there but here it goes. I think this "beautiful boy" who she wants to be with,is a good man.like jesus.the part about "the devil's water" implies that maybe she's tempting him. maybe they can't be together for whatever reasons. i don't know. but she still thinks this is the only man that can "save her". when he says "on the back of a hurricane that started turning when you were young" i think implies that the troubles (hurricane) have been there since she was young.but now with his help they are behind them. "on the back" of it. I think that both the part about the climbing the mountain and the highway both symbolize that she needs him to help her move ahead. to help her learn how to live. It's a great song and i'm sure it has more meanings than one.most songs do. |

to shauna1: I don't know if Bukowski ever said that but he did say "look out for the traps, friend, there are plenty of them, they say even God got trapped when He once walked on Earth. of course, now some of us are not so sure it was god,but whoever he was,he had some fairly good tricks but it seemed he talked too much.anybody can talk too much." That's from one of his stories called Bad Trip. Bukowski was a drunk,a madman, but he also happened to be a genius of a writer. oh and by the way Radiohead fucking rules! |

I kinda agree with the last post about how he has always felt alienated in this WORLD.I think the lyrics "life is hard enough when you belong here" are way deeper than some of you are giving him credit for. |

Thank you Miss Susan, and the two following posts. I feel the same way. He does have deeper feelings for this person. Why would it be so hard for him if he didn't care? I think the reason he rejects her/him is that Morrissey can't REALLY love anybody else. He's a total narcissist. And I don't think he wants to love anybody.Maybe in his younger years he was obsessive, but from his music you can tell that he's changed.matured. on a side note: everyone keeps talking about how he was so obsessed with James Dean. He was way more obsessed with Oscar Wilde and with good reason. |

| Depeche Mode – The Love Thieves Lyrics

This is my favorite depeche mode song. It's one of the more poetic ones as well. To me the whole song is quite simple. It's about love, how we'll never be able to live up to it's beauty. It's not a religious song necessarily, But I think it implies that love is a god.
"Love needs its martyrs
Needs its sacrifices
They live for your beauty
And pay for their vices"
What has martyrs and sacrafices?gods. And at one point we are all disciples of love. he talks of 'paying for their vices'. It's a large price we pay for love, even death sometimes. Did anyone else notice he keeps talking about death?
"Love will be the death of
My lonely soul brothers
But their spirits shall live on in
The hearts of all lovers"
'Their spirits shall live on in the hearts of all' Romantics! |
