Snowden – Anti Anti Lyrics 13 years ago
This is the anthem of a generation. Dare I say, it's even hipster-ish in it's attitude. We don't care about anything enough to really do anything about it. Trends dictate what we stand for until they get old and are no longer cool. We would rather have a good time and forget our troubles/ problems and pretend that nothing is wrong. At least that's what I get from it. Great song either way.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Way Out Lyrics 18 years ago
I interpreted the line "the shit is runnin and it runs deep" to mean that she is or was stringing the guy along. Or that the relationship was never real. Thus my comment about her being full of it. She knows the relationship is a joke because she's was not really ever into it.

Pretty much agree with Wildflower; this song seems like it's about apathy. How people often decide to become numb to the world as a way of escaping all the crap life throws at them. The writer is treating life like a non-stop, drug induced party, putting up a carefree attitude and trying not to take anything seriously.

Snowden – Between the Rent and Me Lyrics 18 years ago
For the record: This is one of my fav bands.

My take on this song is that he met someone at the bus stop that he really likes. He hasn't made any attempts approach the person because he is either too shy or scared. Meeting this person seems to have turned his life upside down. It may be a coworker or someone he sees frequently.

It's basically about a crush that comes out of nowhere.

" you were just swinging like a dime posing with no reason and no rhyme".

"Id been waking up for quite some time
workers breaking pavement outside
then one day at the bus stop getting high
all legs and all hair dye"

He talks about how he met her and how much he wants her. He starts obsessing over this crush, as most people do, and it almost becomes a pain to him:

"this is where I realize
my trouble comes with bluest eyes"

I don't get the impression that they have any kind of relationship or history with the girl he is talking about. In fact, it seems like they have never really ever spoken to each other ever.

what do you think I am leaning on the wall?
what do you think I am, or do you think at all?

"now when I walk in the room you know its all I can do
to stare at the floor and not to look at you"

He seems to be lamenting over how he doesn't have the guts to make a move, much less even make eye contact. So he simply continues on desiring her from a distance as it were.

M.I.A. – Bamboo Banga Lyrics 18 years ago
aside from the "primitive" comment I agree with most. (I hope you don't mean what I think you mean). This song is sick. The whole album is actually. It's so interesting to see music that I think I am familiar with as a westerner, preformed and composed from a completely different viewpoint. There are so many regional musical influences interwoven in this album it's stunning for the brain. I would never have imagined all these types of music could work together in any way. It's genius.

Deftones – Digital Bath Lyrics 18 years ago
Seems to me the song is about an abortion that the speaker perfoms in a basement bathtub.

"You move like I want to
To see like your eyes do" - He admires the innocence of the child.

"We are downstairs where
No one can see
New life breakaway" - The event is taking place in a place where no one can see. "New life breakaway" refers to the infant being born, breaking away from the mothers body..

"You make the water warm
You taste foreign
And I know you can see
The cord breakaway" - The body makes the water warm. The child opens it's eyes. The cord is the umbillical cord.

"You breathed
Then you stopped
I breathed then dried you off" The child passes. He dries off the body.

That's always been the impression i got from the lyrics anyway. It's anyone's guess.

Interpol – All Fired Up Lyrics 18 years ago
Songs seems to be about Death/Sin and the hold it has on mankind. It seems to be bragging of it's power and control over all men and that it can and will lead all off into destruction. Maybe it is the Devil singing? either way, great song, great lyrics and downright creepy.

Garbage – The Trick Is To Keep Breathing Lyrics 18 years ago
The moral of the story is: Things can't get better if your dead. In other words, don't give up. To keep breathing is an encouraging notion, that as long as you are alive things will get better. Most of life's trial are temporary, but when your going through them it can seem like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Relief seems miles away. The song is saying don't give up, commit suicide, become apathetic or throw in the towel.

Big fan of this band. Particularly this sone and Textbook. Most likely because I can really relate to the message. I must say WAS has a really awesome drummer. His style is quirky and adds a whole different interpretation on how to approach the drums on many of their songs. It's akin to a jazz and drum style.

I agree with Octoberist. She's basically saying she's full of crap and not worth his time. She's saying what she appears to be is not who she really is and so he should leave her alone. She also feels smothered and bothered by this guy that she had no intention of getting serious with.

Interpol – PDA Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow... rape... religion. This one seems to be all over the place. This band tends to avoid songs with social commentary as the main theme. It's usually personal and introspective when it comes to lyrics. I feel this is about a relationship that went bad. Really bad.

"You will not reach me I am resenting a position that is past resentment
And now I can't consider and now there is this distance, so..."

He feels so much anger towards her that he almost feels nothing at all. And he actually feels terrible about the fact that he is feeling so callous. He is "past resenting" and so is she. Ever been so angry that you didn't care anymore? There is really nothing left to even talk about because things between them are that bad. They are emotionally miles apart with no hope of reconcilliation.

"You're so cute when you're frustrated, dear
You're so cute when you're sedated, dear"
He says he only likes her when she is frustrated and sedated. He's being sarcastic and mocking her as in:"You're a nice person... when your sleeping" kind of way. It seems they never really got along too well.

"You are a past dinner, the last winner I'm raping all around me
Until the last drop is behind you"

A past dinner, referring to time spent together. The last winner, referring to her being the one who dumped him. He's raping around himself.. raping, means to take, forcefully, something against the will of another. It's about power through action in most cases. He is making a fuss, perhaps expressing his anger, tearing himself apart (or maybe the relationshp?) as she walks away from things, thus the "drops" left behind her.

"You are the only person who's completely certain there's nothing here to be into
That is all that you can do. You are a past sinner, the last winner and everything we've come to"
She was "certain" there was nothing left of their relationship and wanted out. She seems to have screwed up quite a bit in the relationship as well.

"But you cannot safely say while I will be away
That you will not consider sadly how you helped me to stray"
It also sounds like he feels that she has changed him in a way he does not like. Perhaps he has become bitter as result of all that has taken place between them. Also it gives me the feeling he's saying that she is making a major mistake in leaving the relationship and will regret this later. But then again, he really doesn't want her.

The sleep tight, grim rite of the chorus is kind of like telling someone to get lost and goodbye with veiled anger. It's very sarcastic too because he talks about having 200 couches for her to go away to sleep on figuratively.

My 2 cents...

Interpol – Public Pervert Lyrics 18 years ago
IMO It's a relationship on the brink. The speaker realizes that his priorities were really out of wack previous to this realization. Now he would like to make ammends and hope his lover will allow more time to do this. We've all been there.

He would like to escape the everyday pressures of life and focus on her and his relationship. He hopes that they can makeup and be together forever.

"Perhaps heartstrings resuscitate
The fading sounds of your life"

My fav line. the metaphorical use of music and sound along with the idea of a "hearstrings" or emotional plays being used to create music in ones heart.

Beautiful writing.

Interpol really is quite the band.

Bad Religion – Better Off Dead Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about people who are never happy with anything. They whine, bitch and moan about their lives and always look for some scapegoat, rather than accept responsibilty for their state in life.

The song seems to address some person that Brett may have in mind particularly. He uses overstated sarcasm beatifully here. It makes me think of how sometimes, when you are subjected to profuse whining and moaning, you want to tell the person to give up on life and go jump off a cliff. They'd be happier dead.

Depeche Mode – Policy Of Truth Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with the people whoo see it as a song about the downside of being completely honest. I always had trouble with the meaning of this song. I came to the conclusion that it is, actually, very literal. It's about the price you pay for the freedom of being totally honest with the world about who you are. There is always punishment waiting for complete truth. It's a somewhat disturbing truth about life we don't like to believe is true.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Zero Lyrics 18 years ago
I neglected to mention that in the beginning of the song he refers to a disconnection he feels within himself. Famous people often have two personalities (one for the world and then the person they really are), and may feel confusion or an inabilty to even see themselves clearly. Thus the "dirty mirror" and "dreams of glass" phrases in the song...

Ok I'm done! No mas!

It's always been my opinion that this song is about feeling frustrated with idea or desire to be popular. I don't think he's talking about a real person in this song. The "she" being referred to is fame or success personified and how he hates her because he can't resist her. Something I'm sure many artist types go through once they reach a certain degree of fame.

The writer feels a great deal of self-loathing at his addicting desire to be popular, and socially elite etc but also realizes there is no point to any of it.

"bullshit fakers, enchanted kingdoms
the fashion victims chew their charcoal teeth"

He sees this part of society for what it really is, yet he knows he is part of it in a sense. And thus his angst at the whole paradoxic conundrum. He wallows in his own grief and yet enjoys it at the same time. All the while wanting "her". "She's the one for me". It is a bit nihilistic as was mentioned, due to the references of futility in all things.

"you blame yourself, for what you can't ignore
you blame yourself for wanting more"

The writer has had a taste of fame, yet he loves it and hates it at the same time. He compares the idea of achieving fame to being on a sinking ship etc. He also feels like the temptation of fame is too strong to resist, even though it makes him feel empty as a result.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.
