I think this song is about thinking too much and worrying about the future instead of living in the present. The singer is writing the song for himself telling himself to stop making plans for the future and to live in the moment "Put your dreams away for now/ I won’t see you for some time". He knows he shouldnt do it "Momma once told me/ You’re already home where you feel love". Being loved should be enough, but the singer is always looking forward and making plans instead of focusing on what he is doing or the people around him who care about him. The chorus, "How’s that bricklayin’ coming/ How’s your engine running/ Is that bridge getting built/ Are your hands getting filled?" he's asking himself if he is focused on what he's currently doing and not off in thought of what lies ahead. He seems to get suck and dreams of what to do next instead of moving forward. |

I believe this song is about chasing what you can never have. He keeps looking for bigger and better things, but in the end it doesnt matter "I know that starting over is not what life's about. But my thoughts were so loud I couldn't hear my mouth." He knows that he will never get what he wants but he keeps trying against his judgement |
