Just my take on it, purely on the story level. First verse is pretty self-explanatory Second verse is taking about how he broke up with his girlfriend, who was fine and dandy, nothing wrong, he just broke up with her, and he doesn't regret it. Though, it seems he does, as he refers to himself as a bad boy, something you wouldn't do if you have a clear conscience. The standing in the shadows, other then the obvious physical sense, could also be a metaphor for depression. He's standing in the shadows, there's no light in his life. Mulholland is a windy road high up in the Hollywood hills, famous for its street racers and car crashes. Almost died up there a few times my self. Taken with the "I wanna write her name in the sky I wanna free fall out into nothin' Gonna leave this world for awhile" There are many cliffs and sudden drops on Mulholland Drive. All together, the way I see it is, he broke up with this 'good girl' that he most likely loved, and tries to persuade himself that it's for the better, while slowly sliding deeper into a depression, ending with him driving off of Mulholland to kill himself. Just my take. |
