Marilyn Manson – Man That You Fear Lyrics 17 years ago
seems insignificant, but here are two points i haven't really noticed in anyone's dissection:

in my liner notes, lines 5 and 6 are separated at "sticking to my pointy ribs are/all your infants" as opposed to "pointy ribs/are all your infants". it seems minor (and it might just be a space conservation issue), but i've noticed that some poets--myself included--will often separate two lines in an unusual place in the sentence for emphasis or to tie together two ideas that would not otherwise seem connected. ergo, i read it as one fluid sentance "spread me open, sticking to my pointy ribs are all your infants in abortion cribs", implying that in the heart of the antichrist/worm are all the souls of the others that have been rejected in a sense--i'm not anti abortion in any way however--bringing the whole issue full circle. like someone else mentioned, there will be another all american antichrist.

another link i see is the line "pinch the head off, collapse me like a weed", which almost seems like an anemic parody of the verse "cut the head off/grows back hard/i am the hydra/now you'll see your star" in the actual track "antichrist superstar". the protagonist admits defeat in a line that plays on or even mocks his former claim of invincibility: he fallen back on the truth of his frail humanity.

Queens of the Stone Age – You Think I Ain't Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire Lyrics 17 years ago
oxymorone, "space flunky" is the average person, a cross between "a "space cadet" and a regular flunky: with four on the floor they're grounded in reality not realy thinking about anything and doing other people's work. "fortifed with the liquor store" is a drunken version of this, raging for no reason and meaninglessly partying

Ladytron – Light and Magic Lyrics 18 years ago
am i the only one who sees a theme running thru this album? not a story per say, but all the songs seem to be about the ways that people cover up the imperfections in their life; 'light and magic' per say. examples i can think of:

seventeen--people who think youth will solve all their problems, along with those who pursue such people's youth after their own fades

fire--a girl escaping in the attention of others using her charisma as a lure

cracked LCD--a man using 'light and magic' to control his lover's perception of him

startup chime--a woman who blocks out life with technology, arguably 'light and magic' in a sense

this song is different in that it seems to be the opposite of that. instead of escaping thru illusions, the protagonist has discarded them and finds life to be boring, nay depressing without them. so, in the end, they end up returning to all the false glitz, or at least severely missing what they know they didn't really have.

Armor for Sleep – End of the World Lyrics 18 years ago
someone's given up trying to live. no matter what happens to them, they'll just sit back and watch the world pull itself down around the ears. they just don't care anymore, and the line "i wanna stay home for the end of the world" somehow suggests that they have an almost childish indifference to calamity of any kind. they're gonna face everything head on by not caring.

Gorillaz – Don't Get Lost in Heaven Lyrics 18 years ago
am i the only one who hears "don't go over the edge/you'll make the people stare"?

to me it seems that this song is a transiton from "the country of sound" (the intro ends with the line "you are now entering the harmonic realm") back to reality, and it seems like its a letdown; the narrator has confirmed that the mountain called monkey is destroyed and he has to go back to the real world. after what he's seen in the harmonic realm, the real world is incredibly depressing: drug dealers, murder, ballooning suburbs (the last references "O Green World" in a sense). the narrator is still spinning from his experiences, and it draws attention "don't go over the edge/you'll make the people stare". at the end he mentions a girl [girlfriend?], possibly the one mentioned in "Every Planet We Reach Is Dead", whom he's become disillusioned with--he's seen all this incredible stuff and she still spends her days at home getting high.
the whole album has a good, naritive flow to it; "Don't Get Lost In Heaven" is like the sad/quiet aftermath scene at the end of some movies, with "Demon Days" as the credits music.

Gorillaz – Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head Lyrics 18 years ago
A few people have applied Tibetan mythology and history to their interpretations; but has it occurred to anyone that "the mountain called monkey" could be a reference to Mt. Gogyou of Chinese (and/or Tibetan) folklore/mythology?

according to Chinese legend, Mt. Gogyou is the central of the five mountains that hold up the world, and the prison of the precocious demi-god the Monkey King (Sun Wu Kong, or Goku in Japanese).
The tale goes that Sun Wu Kong hatched from a stone egg, and so had neither mother nor father. The nature of his birth endowed him with powers greater than most of the gods, and he ran rampant throughout the kingdom. Managing at one point to steal and consume one of Xi Wang Mu's Peaches of Immortality (or he ripped his name out of the book of deaths), he became utterly untouchable and equally unmanageable. Since he was indestructible, he decided to crash the gates of heaven because causing panic earth was no longer entertaining. The gods eventually appealed to the Buddha to cease the chaos. Buddha complied and imprisoned him in Mt. Gogyou indefinitely.

In an interesting twist, Sun Wu Kong remained in Mt. Gogyou for 500 years, until the monk Xuan Zang freed him to accompany him on his trip to India to collect sacred scriptures. However, this is a separate myth known as Xi You Ji or Journey to the West.

Oddly enough, I've read a manga version of Xi You Ji--Kazuya Minekura's rather heavily altered Saiyuki--and her characterization of Sun Wu Kong rather reminds me of Noodle. They both share an almost divine innocence and insight only children are capable of, as well as destructive powers they cannot consciously exhibit (Goku only lashes out when his companions are in mortal danger, and when he returns to his normal self the magnanimity of his power terrifies him). That innocence is also displayed by the Happyfolk; perhaps there is a connection to Noodle's supposed death in the El Manana video, as if the violation of the mountain called monkey, of childhood profoundity, is a disrespect to her memory, which lashed out in retaliation.

Akino Arai – Hiru no Tsuki Lyrics 18 years ago
yeah, its pretty close though, the full lyrics go like this:

one soundless midday
the wind was fresh and clean
the flowerpetals swayed as if they were asleep

this serene feeling
tell me, what's the name people use for it?

tell me a story that's locked away in the white-sand moon
let me hear it as gently as light shining down

-instrumental-

will the time come? when will you know the pain in my heart?
then you'd be able to be gentler that you are now

such a warm feeling
tell me, what's the name people give to it?

softly, let me hear of the distant future
so bright it can't be seen, like a white-sand moon

anyway, i love this song, my favorite acutualy. it taught me my first japanese and the credit artwork has been and inspiration to me for a long time. if you can find the full japanese verson, check it out. it sounds incredible, like what the moon would be like if it were a paradise and not just a dead rock. = )

Blink-182 – I Won't Be Home for Christmas Lyrics 18 years ago
this is soooo my song.....
do any of you know how much it freaking sucks to be born the day after xmas? people are always telling me to cheer up and be happy about it when all i want is for them leave me the hell alone and for one of my friends to actualy remember that i exist...
why does the non-christian portion of the world see it nessairy to celibrate xmas anyway? instead of being about jesus its just about junk. i don't see why the government doesn't call it giftmas instead...

and whoever said that this would be on an xmas cd 20 years in the future is probably right.
yay irony!

it sounds like my hometown and my friends--nothing ever happens here, except whatever fantastic thing we make up about what's going to happen when we're older. though we know these things will never happen we continue to pretend they will so our lives don't seem so miserable. i don't know where billy grew up, but it could be written about the wierdo population of any rural highschool.

always reminds me of a friend of mine with a rape fetish and an obsession with serial killers.......we usualy call her a whore or the queen of the damned.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Thru the Eyes of Ruby Lyrics 18 years ago
this song is pure poetry, but i especialy like the part starting with "and with this ring i wed thee true", on into the end. i always thought the line "so speak your peace to the murmurs drawn" was "speak your peace unto the murderous dawn", sounds cool, ne?

my spin is that its about realizing that you hate someone you love or you love someone you hate, though i'm leaning toward the latter; it almost seems like the singer is declaring that they will submit to the object of their hatred, "and with this ring i play so dead", but at the same time they want them dead dead dead "your strength is my weakness, your weakness my hate, my love for you just can't explain why we're forever frozen forever beautiful, forever lost inside ourselves... the night has come to hold us young...". though ultimately it will end in murder/suicide, because the singer is so obsessed that s/he doesn't want this conflict to end.

the vocal distortion is the problem, but once you get past it the lyrics, however plain, are eff-ing wonderful... the chorus [if you can call it that] expresses what the truly enraged all know (actualy it says exactly the same thing in Bullet with the Butterfly Wings), that you're powerless no matter what you do.

Soundgarden – 4th of July Lyrics 18 years ago
all i can think of when i hear this song is slacking off in gym and lying on the grass looking at the impossibly blue empty sky and wondering what it would be like if the sky went black, the grass burst into ankle-high spectral flame, and the Angel of Death/Desting stood in the corner of my vision, beckoning.....
[which is what the line "down in the hole, Jesus tries to crack a smile", means to me; that Our Lord is straining to deal with the fallout.]

plus i love the riff.... it leaks doom from the speakers and oozes into my aching mortal bones............

hehehehehehehehe....................

Soundgarden – The Day I Tried to Live Lyrics 18 years ago
it seems to me that the singer woke up one day and everything went to hell, literaly. as if the whole world broke out into riot and all of the animal instincts and baseness of humanity, the stuff that civilization attempts to cover up with law and society, has all come out. think about it, the lines alude to random shootings, lynchings, looting, and people's hypocracy in general. in the end the singer, who has a semi-rational perspective on things, figures out that despite his non-participation, he's still as corrupt as everyone else; the you of "and i learned that i was a liar just like you" being the same person that spoke to him right befor he woke up.

i love the image of dead bodies hanging from the powerlines at dawn... it strikes a chord with me for some reason.

there's a quote from some antropologist that fits here:
"you are a unique and special individual...just like everyone else"

i believe on the first page of comments anni says "one by one the lawn gnomes are stealing my sanity"--its PENGUINS, not lawn gnomes.

i love this song, though i never knew who Francis Farmer was.
the second verse sounds like it could be any ailenated teenager with mental health issues planning their revenge on the people who ostricize them--my life in a nutshell....oh fun.......

great song though, i like the revenge angle =)

Butthole Surfers – Pepper Lyrics 18 years ago
i agree with the highschool theory, but i have to say that there are some people in the world who are naturaly in a stoned state of mind, and if you're one of those people then the verses are your old friends or neighborhood playmates going out and getting killed while you just sit back and laugh/wonder what the hell happened. the way the "mikey got with sharon" part starts sets up the feeling of gossip and rumor sharing while the chorus is the singer describing the surreal feeling of his/her own life. i always thought "i don't mind the sun some times" was "i don't mind the sense of time", which would give the aura of perspective. its a great song anyway, especialy just to mutter to freak people out. ^_^

as to the meaning of the title, i've heard that your skin goes kinda silvery after you die....
so maybe its a song about necrophilia and some guy who saves his object of obsession/girlfriend's body after she dies and....i dunno....does something with it.

i do love the line "and what i've recoverd of me/i've put into a box underneath my bed" tho.....

Silversun Pickups – Lazy Eye Lyrics 18 years ago
i don't know if i have a bad habit of turning love songs into angry masses of negativity, but i get a sarcastic impression. it seems to me like someone has been waiting for the moment to finaly get someone off their back so to speak, to get rid of the "lazy eye" that is following them--"everyone's so intimately rearranged/everyone can focus clearly with such shine" meaning that everyone else is stareing down the singer as they confront the person who is against them. "its the room and the sun and the sky" has the feeling that it has either come to a peaceful resolution or the room has been left dead silent by the singer's confrontation.
and kudos on the name Randall Flagg ;)

Brand New – Jesus Christ Lyrics 18 years ago
i was amazed an slightly creeped out when i first heard this song because at the time i was suicidal and falling for a guy completely out of my leauge...... a very surreal experience if there ever was one.

most people have said the line "and at the gates does Thomas ask to see my hands" is a biblical refference, but what occored first in my mind was the stamp that you get at the fair or something when you're admitted so that the ticket collector knows that you've paid; as if the's been in heaven before or something or they're asking if he's paid his dues to karma or something (yes i know karma is a hindu/buddhist concept but i assume my meaning is understood).

speaking from personal experience--not to discredit the experience of others--it perfectly encapsulates the thoughts that are running through your head when you write that note and start waiting [for death].

Nirvana – The Man Who Sold the World (David Bowie cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
thank you to the people on the most recent page of postings for not hurling insults, it was starting to get annoying.

to me this song has always been about the archetypical villan/greatest fear, the man responsible for the nightmares that you wake up from screaming and make you leave the light on, the man whose voice you start hearing when you know you're gonna die a miserable/vioent death. you him, in a sense, when you're alone and you come away wishing you and the rest of the world were dead if only to be rid of him. that's just my interpretation.

in a wierd way it strikes a resonance with Stephen King's book The Gunslinger, the gitaur (whatever chord it's in) gives an impression of a desert to me and The Man Who Sold The World could well be compared to Walter (i.e. The Man In Black), who is essentialy facilitating the Apocalypse.

Bright Eyes – Take It Easy (Love Nothing) Lyrics 18 years ago
i love this song, mostly for its whinsome tone, somehow femmine in my ears.
pretty much everyone has said that this is entirely from the point of view of the guy in the later verses, but i see it as an eccentric woman--a widow for some reason--who has known a kid since his early teens and has sort of looked after him. the beach verse illustrates that period to me the most, as if she took him on trips. the last line in that verse sounds like she is actualy speaking. i think that it starts in the middle, during sex with him for the first time, then flashes back to what their relationship was like a few years ago, when the realtionship was more mother-son, and she realizes that it's a sort of mental incest so she backs out, but she's become so accustomed to her solitude that she just leaves him a note. the "cartoon cat pad" seems like another refference to his youth (i see her as late 30's, him 16 or 17). the verse after is transitonal, she goes back to sleep, and declares that she's going to live like she did before she met him, with callous disregard for everyone since she's already lost her love before the story began. her young lover still haunts her memory though, and she can't forget him anymore than you can get a song out of your head once its stuck.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Bodies Lyrics 18 years ago
a guy falls in love--first true, stinging, highschool love--with a beautiful girl with a bad past who thinks he only loves her for her body when nothing could be further from the truth. they are both rather nihilistic people with a love of destruction. he professes his adoration of her and she freaks out, casting him from her life. for months afterward he is caught in an emotional tangle of hatred and pathetic, unrequited love, constantly muttering the phrase "love is suicide". the song his profession of love.

ironicaly enough, a dear friend of mine could very well be the singer.

wonderful, wonderful, wonderful song.... billy-sensei could just become a poet for a living--but then there'd be no more music
life sucks but in those few moments/minutes/hours its wonderful and nothing can go wrong and you feel freaking invincible. there is irony in it and a sense of striving somehow, what the singer is striving against is up to yet more interpretation. whenever this song comes on at midnight i know the day is going to be memorable whether good or bad.

coincidently, if there are any anime fans posting, this song reminds me of the Uchiha brothers from Naruto. any thoughts?

and yes it is realy emo, but most smashing pumpkins songs are if you stop and think about it.

Radiohead – Creep Lyrics 18 years ago
i don't know many radiohead songs, but this one is my favorite, probably because its described too many people in my life.
everyone, at some point in their life is going to have someone that makes them feel like a creep, its a rite of passage i think. unfortunately, some people are predispositoned to living in that wonderful/horrible state of joyus terror that feels like altitude sickness; but in the end you usualy find out the person is a jerk or an airhead--no one is realy perfect, our mind just finds something that appeals to us when we're desperate and glazes over the parts that don't fit to keep us from going nuts.

personaly i agree with all the hooker/drug/vampire theroies, but it seems to me that, at least as far as the becoming x album goes, all the songs are about the "wasted youth" of the then current times. i love it tho :)
i know most of the posters say that "6 underground" means dead, buried, but it could also mean the subways and/or underground culture of a large city. maybe its both, i dunno.......
