i thought this was a sappy, mushy song til the lyrics hit me. my take on this is that these two are actually exes who broke up, became friends and thought that they were over each other (i think the line is "why throw a circle 'round a man with broken bones", "i always knew that you'd leave me anyway"). they were trying to preserve their friendship but realise it can't be just that. it's a song about denial and finally owning up to what they really feel ("i wanna tell you that i'd never love anyone else"). i love how the song picks up and progresses and how it seems like they're having a confrontation towards the end ("this is not what i'm like; this is not what i do..." / "i never thought"). the girl actually sounds frustrated, like her feelings and/or the guy betrayed her. then the last line mellows again, like they've finally accepted it. |
