This song is about Alan Wilder, duh. You and I have come so far / We've reached beyond the farthest star Time and time and time again / I want you back You were a friend / We can't pretend Obviously about their time together in DM and how the band was considered at their peak when Alan was still around. Also, they were very close friends so it'll make sense how Dave wants him back. |

I think the whole "my lioness" theme ties in to the album cover of the lions attacking the antelope/gazelle/whatever. "The angels remark outside" - it is possible he might be referring to those statues of angels on buildings, in particular, outside a hotel room? Some have said that this song is about him having "seen love" and lost it, and now he exacts 'revenge' on random women and groupies. Again it ties in with the animal theme on the cover. "See how I stun" - a reference to how lions kill their prey? How he kills his prey? The wonderful thing about Pace is that it's such a multi-layered song and it probably has so many different levels of meanings and can be interpreted in so many ways. This was what Paul was probably aiming for. |

The way I interpret the song is this: you know how we go our whole lives looking for that one person who is perfect for us, the one who understands the way we think, who shares the same sense of humour, who has the same wavelength. This song is about someone finding that person (the so-called 'soulmate') and being taken with how much they think alike. But in the end, while we hope for our 'soulmate' to rescue us from ourselves and our unhappiness, the reality is that it never happens, because it is unrealistic to place your source of happiness in another person. The lyrics speak clearly of this person finding their soulmate and being ecstatic at first to see how alike they are ('symmetry of your mind') and of course, they start off seeing this person as perfect, as the one who can rescue them from loneliness and despair. However, the person is disappointed to realise that their 'soulmate' is imperfect like everyone else, and they have arguments like every other relationship ('wrong words that we had spoken'.) This has resulted in hurt, but this hurt is intensified because this person is supposed to be 'The One' and yet the arguments and disagreements are ongoing and there is no salvation - the 'soulmate' does not rescue the person from their despair and they do not live happily ever after. This song showcases the person's disillusion ('Truly with you the worst is always true, I gave you all the benefits of all the doubts') but at the same time, they recognise that this person is truly special simply because they really do think alike, and they realise this even after all the disillusion has faded away. |

| You should see them perform this song live. They play it on its own, not after 'Rain City' like in the album. It's so surreal and atmospheric, as there are visuals of blue-ish waves of barley/wheat dancing in the wind, playing on a screen behind them. And Olly's voice - wow, you can really hear the emotion in it when he sings this song live. It constantly reminds me why they're my favourite band ever - can't wait for Dark On Fire, out in September! | |

I suspect this is about Paul Banks' real ex - most probably an actress from California, from the clues littered in the lyrics. As with most break-ups, he definitely still has feelings for his ex, and battling the confusion he feels. On one hand, he still remembers how good it was with her, how looking into her eyes makes him feel ('move heaven behind those eyes') and the recurring mention of the 'shoes' could be symbolic of a memory between them (those who have watched the movie Wicker Park would understand how a pair of shoes came to be a huge symbol for the main couple, as it was how they got together.) On the other hand, he still remembers why they broke up in the first place and why he applied the 'brakes' to their relationship, although in the end he feels lonely and still misses her. It's the classic scenario of wanting the familiar and the comforting, because he's scared of change and he's scared of ending up alone, but at the same time, he knows falling back into their old relationship will open those wounds again and possibly cause even more. In short, he knows they shouldn't be together again, but he's torn as he looks at her and thinks of her. But he knows he's now got a shot at a new beginning, a new girl whoever she may be, and he wants his ex to know this, in a possible attempt to spite her/spurn her - at one point, who didn't want to do that to our exes? Ha. All in all, a really marvellous song that speaks of how we can never really be completely cold because, to borrow a line from their song 'Leif Erikson', "all the people that you've loved, they're all bound to leave some keepsakes." So this song is probably an ode to the transition period between him missing her immensely, and him deciding to move on. |
