Chevelle – Emotional Drought Lyrics 15 years ago
Pete Loeffler speaks about the origins of this song here: http://listenin.org/interviews/archive/artists/Chevelle/default.aspx

He'd had a fight with his brother after the studio was built, and had been experiencing a drought of creativity -- that energy from the fight led to these lyrics.

Kate Bush – Nocturn Lyrics 15 years ago
To me, this song is about the glory of being, of diving in the ocean, of searching, of unity of the self with the universe, of how we tire of things, of how we attach and desire things, and of awakening from these dreams of illusory existence. How the sun brings life to us all "bright, white, coming alive/jumping off the aerial" -- in its never-ending search and animation.

I still get shivers every time I listen to the punctual "ALL THE DREAMERS ARE WAKING"

It reminds me I am not alone in my dreaming, and by bringing mindfulness to my everyday life, I am a part of this light, this life, jumping off the aerial.

R.E.M. – Half A World Away Lyrics 15 years ago
I have a love/hate relationship with this song. I love the art that is this song, in its architecture, in its abstractness that invites one to see into it different things perhaps at different times.

This song is so imbued with personal meaning for me, however, having been played over & over when my wife moved away after she fell in love with someone else, that all my comments come from that space. Some of this is projection, some of it may have been in Stipe's head, who knows?

For me, this song is about being so forsaken at love that has left and moved, with only yourself to keep going, that you drink to numb the pain. There are miracles of grand nature around you constantly and you are blind to them in your suffering at love lost.

Hands aching from all the wasted attempts to communicate, from wringing in pain. Mind racing from analyzing what has happened, what could have been done/said differently, what could be done now to repair. There is no calmness of mind or spirit in the turmoil of relationships torn asunder.

Life as a couple split apart, and so very, very far -- in fact, the absolute furthest one can get while on the planet: half a world away.

Elliott Smith – Almost Over Lyrics 18 years ago
This song amps me up in a way no other Elliott Smith song has; the tremolo guitar work that starts about 1:19 into it, flows across multiple voices and into the last chorus shows an artist at his prime of technical ability. But along with the heat and dazzle, is an urgency and poignancy -- when will the worst part be over? now? now? now?

This song is about a confrontation with someone's unrealistic expectations from other people, from the world. The root topic isn't clear, and that makes it better art -- everyone holds something in themselves that needs to hear this, that needs correcting.

My favorite lines are "do I have to guess like everyone else" and "you think I'm mean 'cause I call you out" -- I know people that won't say what they mean, and only through inference can you tell what's going on with them -- and the same person can dish it out but can't take it. So they think others are mean when that get called on their own BS.

Move over, Speed Trials, Almost Over is my new favorite Elliott Smith song...

Elliott Smith – Fake It Through the Day (Miss Misery, early version) Lyrics 18 years ago
I like this version of the song better as well; both are nice, but this one is closer to the spirit in which it was written.

Oh, and the start of the last bit sounds like this to me:

Next door the tv's flashing blue frames on the wall
