| Cake – Pretty Pink Ribbon Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I agree with earlier comments rather than the most recent ones. I believe the "pretty pink ribbon" is a reference to femininity and not cancer. A pink ribbon isn't a symbol for breast cancer for arbitrary reasons. It's a symbol for breast cancer BECAUSE it's a symbol for femininity. I don't doubt that the mentioning of cancer in the song is in reference to the pink ribbon, but I'm rather sure that cancer is meant in a figurative sense to represent a severe character flaw. Because of the protection afforded by the "ribbon," the subject of the song doesn't die socially. I also believe that "pretty pink ribbon" and "sticky little kitten" are meant rather more explicitly to represent the female genitalia. It just makes sense to me that Cake would write a song about a woman with serious character flaws whose only salvation is her femininity and flirtation rather than a song about someone dying of cancer and surviving due to a pink ribbon breast cancer awareness campaign. Many of Cake's songs focus on the subtle flaws or virtues of women or how others perceive and act on them (Short Skirt, Long Jacket, The Distance, Daria, Let Me Go, Love You Madly, Friend is a Four-letter Word, Stickshifts and Safety Belts, etc.). |
