Without any real Belle & Sebastian background, and supposing I haven't read the "going blind" causes that have been posted here, which are reasonbable (and which would make this phrase a literal quote), I would say this song is about how Lisa is different and how the people around her can't see it, or won't see it. Instead they try taking her to the doctor and giving her pills (which I think are only methaphors to understand the barrier that was built around her, which would be the lack of will to understand her). I would also say that the doctor saying she'd go blind if she wasn't careful is a way to say that this supposed doctor was advising her to be normal, or not to put too much thought into anything because then she'd lose herself (go blind). Which incidentally is what leads her to blindness (you know how they say when people tell you not to do something, you tend to do the opposite) This was a way to encourage her to keep being helself. I think more than disappointed, she was mad. About the orthopedic shoes I would say dream of horses is right, another metaphor to understand her trying to at least cope with everything, but still she can't ...she's meant to be different, which is good, her limping could also mean she'd still stand out. About people saying she's beautiful only temperamental/slightly mental, it could mean how people around her were so superficial and how they thought she's wasting her beauty with such behavior or thoughts. I think it is also important to mention the part where it says "she was tired of sleeping" ..she was willing to try new things to feel alive or to escape everything. Anyway this is just my point of view ..if I made some research about lisa and other songs in which she's present, maybe it would change. But again, I think the main point of the song is about her inadaptation because of the people around her, it is a kind of criticism to the people who think they're right and won't bother trying to go beyond (understanding Lisa), because it would prove them wrong, it would be a kind of reality check... which by the way we all hate, but sometimes we need a slap on the face. =) |

yeah i think it's abou independence, wanting something more than what was usual for you and finally going for it after wanting it for a long while ...how she felt there were no limits ..the lyric might me simple but it really inspires me and yeah lots of us feel that way and what we should do is step outside of the known once in a while and doing something for ourselves wide open spaces means to me the world ..everything that we don't yet know and that is waiting out there for us |

| to understand better this song you should read the back part of their -the best of hanson live and electric- cd ..that way you really, and i mean really understand what "watch me bleed " means because this song just mentions it on the surface ..but the song is really good, it is about someone trying luck at the music industry and not getting it, and how he still tries no matter what people say (take a breath look around, well there's nothing left in this town for a rocker ball rolling down) ..there's the electric version which includes a great piano solo by taylor | |

great divide talks about well of course, the people in africa who suffer from HIV, and the purpose of this song is selling it so that the profits support them and we fight against mother-child transmition of aids ..thats what i read, so you should download it on itunes to help this cause ..anyway, this song really gets to you, it talks about how the people who are facing difficulties (in this case, people with aids), knowing that they have very little hope, still struggle for getting through and makinng things better ..it talks about them having hope ..having hope in other people's help, and encouraging others saying that together we can conquer great divides |

| i think penny and me is mostly about memories and what sticks to yours making you enjoy them... like taylor hanson said, penny could be interpreted as music, or anything that makes you feel ..in other words soaring or flying, just enjoying moments and storing them, and penny is that thing that is always there with you when you live them making you feel complete and alive ...this song is not at all literal, which is what i like about it ..i think the part where it says penny likes to get away and drown her pein in lemonade... refers to missing those times and that what penny would be to you, is also there for you at those times of remembering | |

| The heart of life is a very simple song, the lyrics at leat ..not that they're simple but they are easy to understand, it speaks literally and without metaphors (which makes ocntrast to many of his other more complex lyrics) ...anyanyway, it is good that is easy to understand, it gives it a light sound and feeling that could be absolutely useful when you're feeling down ..i actually listened to it when my dog died haha ...its just about making you feel better and seeing the bright side of things ..of life. john mayer's voice in this song makes me feel like he's tryiong to comfort someone during a bad period of life, telling him/her optimistic things ..but ..at the same time knowing deep inside that what just happened really sucked ..i just found out that other meaning | |

i think gravity is not about something in particular, it talks about feeling so down as you can go and he mentions gravity as the mean to pull you down ..so gravity can be interpreted as any thing that makes you feel down ..i don't know what was that thing that john was referring to while writing this song, but its sure had to be something to make it so deep. Keep me where the light is i think that refers to pleading that things get better than they are and not to go even lower. The blues sound along with the lyrics makes you really feel it even if you listen to the song while being happy ..i dont know why we like to torture ourselves like that but the sound of it is so good that we can't help it. |

| in the "any given thursday" DVD ..jm explains about this song ..he says that this song talks about a similar feeling to when you're dreading a day of the week and not being able to remember why or what was gonna happen that day.. or having thoughts escaping you ..just feeling like somebody else or feeling incomplete ...i think a way to find a meaning to this song is thinking about a time when you feel like you're outside your body watching you live, not knowing what you're lacking but still being sure that there is one thing you're missing. I like the fact that it doesnt refer exactly to love and everyone can relate to this song no matter what is the thing that you're missing | |

i think this song is about telling people who live life in a closed space, not litterally, but all of those who live life behind the safe line... he's motivating them to explore, to leave that closed space in which they live and to find out what is ahead of them ..and in the part when he says "though lately i cant blame you" i think he means ..well yeah i understand why you hide sometimes because i have felt that way too ..i think it's one of his best and definitely one to hear in winter time ...the only thing i wonder is ..why does he say pull all the shades and wander the great indoors ..shouldnt it say outdoors? |
