"Back before I got mad at U2, this was one of the songs I loved." Glad to know there was such a time Theresa ;p |

| U2 – The Wanderer Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I remember reading about Bono saying this was based upon Ecclesiates (I think) where a great prophet tries everything: hedonism, ascetism, being uber-religious, being atheistic, and generally "To taste and to touch and to feel as much As a man can before he repents ". But in the end decides that "all is meaningless except loving God, loving your Family, and loving your Work. The Wanderer is also an unreliable narrator, that is, all the stuff he says is his firm belief, but not the truth. He's angry with God, he's angry with people who are Godless, he's turned his back on religion and also on other people who turn their backs on religion. Basically, hes a confused, passionate, messed up bloke. Which is why Cash is perfect! |

iheartlarry It's a sample from an old movie, but i can't remember which. I'll have a go at transcribing it. There's a man shouting a little kids repeating after him (in caps) "I wanna be an airborne ranger I WANNA BE AN AIRBORNE RANGER I wanna live a life of danger I WANNA LIVE A LIFE OF DANGER (drums kick in) Burn BURN Death DEATH Kill KILL KILL KILL" Kind of disturbing really. The song I think is about suitcase atomic bombs. Think Sum of All Fears, think the biggest nightmare of the US: terrorists get their hands on a nuke and can do whatever they like with it. I love the fact that this is one of the most cheerful sounding songs U2 have written, but when you listen to the lyrics its pretty chilling, especially since it was written before the concept of anyone other than a superpower possessing a nuke was really around. |

I'm not sure the lyrics are right (though since there's no offical release, its hard to say) I thought he was "digging" the ditches of someone elses love/luck,that love "hears" when he lies and has to be with the "Weak" not a wink. Also the "I can hear so much" sounds more like "I consult my..." which makes no sense, but eh... I really hope this gets released one day as a single. Its six and a half minutes of u2 at their most u2ish. If it had been on HTDAAB it would have surely been my favourite by a long way. |

| U2 – Hawkmoon 269 Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
One of my all time U2 favourites. It would sound so very very corny if anyone else did a cover. On the subject of the title, the joke was that Hawkmoon was a word that sprung into Bono's head when making words up at the mic, and 269 was the number of the mix that they chose to put on the album ie. Hawkmoon version 269...Then they confirmed in their book that actually thats exactly what happened, they spent 2 weeks straight putting together different mixes of the song and came out with this one. Apparently it was a slightly strained time in the band. "Like thunder needs rain Like a preacher needs pain Like tongues of flame Like a sheet stained I need your love" I love this bit, but I always thought it was "Like a SOUP stain" which really annoyed me because it didn't fit at all. |

This song contains about half of Achtung Baby on it: the bass and solo from The Fly, the guitars from Ultraviolet and lots of other little moments from other songs spawned from this demo. It's almost impossible for me not to nod along to the beat as I listen to this. And since we're on Song Meanins, i guess is should concurr that it's about gambling in general, and Lady Luck. |

"I love you 'cause I need to Not because I need you I love you 'cause I understand That God has given me your hand He holds me in a tiny fist And still I need your kiss" Probably my favourite lyric ever in any song. I agree a bit with PencilNeckedGeek though, its very hit and miss. Apparently it came along too late in the Joshua Tree sessions for them to put enough work to get it onto the album. It's really the bare bones of what could have been an epic. |

| U2 – Beautiful Ghost Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| aha, and yet the scriptures frequently mention the "spirit of God" do they not? the pentacost, Jesus' Baptism? These are taken from the bible that three of the 4 members of U2 follow, though they don't adhere to any particular denomination. and just to clarify, i meant religious interpretation of song, not religious songs themselves. it may be about an early morning....intimate experiance between Bono and his wife for all i know. how simply listening to such a song would condemn the masses to permanent damnation is beyond me. I also apologise to any others on this page who couldnt care less about our little tiff. cheerio | |

| thersa1... what about a common name for the 3rd member of the trinity, the holy spirit (a.k.a the holy ghost)? i always assumed that was what this song was about, the HS prodding people back from the brink, though i do so detest people forcing religious interpretations on others. as an aside, i really love bono's voice in this song/recital/thingy | |
