Billie Joe has said that this song was written after a break-up, and when things proceeded to get even worse, he added "Good Riddance" to the title. I think while this song was ORIGINALLY about a break-up, it can be interpreted as letting go, in general, in life. Or however the listener decides they can relate to it. |

haha.. the funny thing is, i know exactly who she wrote this song about. i dated him for a few months after he broke her heart. it's pretty funny that i can relate to this song so much because of it. |

At a show, before playing this song, Ronnie Winter made a comment along the lines of "____ people commit suicide each year in America" (May not be his exact words, but something close to that.) I've kind of come to the conclusion that this song is about someone close to him (his girlfriend) attempting suicide. "You said that you would die for me, you must live for me too." means that she said she would die for him, but she must live for him for as long as she can, and not end her own life. "Are we the same people as before this came to light" means him asking the question "Are we the same people as we were before it became apparent that you were suicidal? Have we changed?" I'm just putting together all the pieces (: |
