| Röyksopp – What Else Is There? Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
If you really want to understand the meaning of the song, you should give "city of angels" a try. It is an amazing film anyway, and it is suprisingly parallel to both video and the lyrics of the song. If you are too lazy to check out the film(SPOILER ALERT): It is about an angel giving up his eternal life to be with the woman he fell in love with, but he loses her in a car accident... |

| Thom Yorke – Analyse Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Thom Yorke is the vocalist of the popular youth band “radiohead”. Despite of its popularity, I do think that Thom Yorke is a musical and philosophical genius. (Popularity and being a genius don’t go together mostly, especially among young people…) No ordinary man could make a song as “panaroid android” and write lyrics such as “analyse”. This song is from his latest solo album, apart from radiohead, an album which contains many electronic music and effective lyrics, and which surely isn’t the end of the band “radiohead”. Especially the lyrics of the song “analyse” are quite deep and worth to analyse. So I want to give it a shot: Firstly, I think the lyrics are about philosophy, the progress Thom Yorke has made and his destination. “A self-fulfilling prophecy of endless possibility” means: the philosophical thruth people try to find, such as the main material of universe or the ultimate meaning of life. “You roll in reams across the street In algebra, in algebra” means: that he is very very busy for phisphilosophical work, he is almost lost in it. “The fences that you cannot climb” means: the obstacles of human mind, such as the lack of ability to imagine endlessnes, or complete disapearance. “The sentences that do not rhyme” means: the little thoughts, theories or maybe truths that he found and which are not feasable, such as nihilism, agnostism, ateism. “In all that you can ever change The one you're looking for” It’s hard to find lyrics of these verses, because it’s really hard to understand if he says “ever” or “never” (“can” makes it hard to hear). But the meaning doesn’t change much in both ways. “Never” would be more pessimistic, that’s all. It means: the philosophical theory, truth that he tries to find, and his aim is to change it, maybe convert to religion or deny it completely. Like the saying “you need to draw a face to your enemy, to be able to punch it”. That’s what Thom Yorke tries to do, he is very unhappy with his situation, wants desprately to change something, something deep and highly real, like his feelings. “It gets you down It gets you down” here we understand that his attempts have failed, he couldn’t find the ultimate truth to change for his peace. “There's no spark No light in the dark” means that the philosophy is only darkness, noone can find anything ,in there to make themselves happy. It’s a major reference to agnostism, which I would like to talk about later on. “It gets you down It gets you down You traveled far What have you found That there's no time There's no time To analyse To think things through To make sense” This part makes it clear how much it saddens Thom Yorke, that his attempts are total failures, “he traveled far” means that he spent much time for this, worked hard. Then he didn’t find anything, nothing to make him happy like he wanted. He realised he is a mortal being and he doesn’t even have the time to carry on his failing attempts. He has maybe 40-50 years ahead, which doesn’t seem enough to him. “Like cows in the city, they never looked so pretty By power carts and blackouts Sleeping like babies” Here he thinks of the alternative, leaving all these behind, giving up everything and not working on philosophy anymore like indians who hold their cows divine. They cannot hurt them in any way, therefore they walk around cities in comfort. It is a life spent without thinking, analysing, just obeying the order. Thom Yorke thinks maybe it’s for the best to try such an empty life, as far as he is concerned his earlier life wasn’t happy or even at peace anyway, he doesn’t have much to lose. In second verse he tries to express the negative sides of such a life. “power carts” and “blackouts” are a reference to philosophical blindness, which may be a trouble for him, but later he says that it must be peaceful anyway… “It gets you down It gets you down” means; that he gave up his last idea, it cannot make him happy at this point, he has gone too far to be foolishly happy. The alternative he found is no more available for him. “You're just playing a part You're just playing a part” means; that he found out the unsignificance of himself, his being and his life. It’s a reference to nihilism. “You're playing a part Playing a part And there's no time There's no time To analyse Analyse Analyse” Makes it clear how desperate he is in his situation. Whole lyrics are so deeply connected to philosophy, that I think I get Thom Yorke’s point of view in philosophy which is very similar to mine. I think that Thom Yorke is a nihilist agnostic person, claiming that we are weak, mostly blind creatures on earth, and it’s not possible for us to find ultimate realities, even if they are there… |

| Interpol – The Lighthouse Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Listen to the music, can't you feel waves? It's soo obvious I think it's about the life of a lighthouse the vocal is soo calm and rather cold, like a lighthouse The lighthouse knows that he will collapse, he sees the giant wave coming towards. But he is still calm-as a building-tower... "I warned them" its life was spent warning people, the use of a lighthouse "What do the waves have to say now? What do the waves have to say now?" the lighthouse spent its life listening to the waves "Here I've been living On roofs made from sin I put an outward, "Begin, begin."" It has been living in civilization and man-made lands(roofs made from sin). He helped them with their sins, showed them their ways and let them begin... "Here I've been lucid I'm living within Inwardly urgent And sinking again" He knows the upcoming wave will destroy it, he prepares for it very calmly... |

| Interpol – Mammoth Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I think it's about a boy telling a girl his feelings. The girl doesn't know if they should be just friends or lovers... So she is in "suspense". The boy is sure that he loves her. He is full of energy for it, tries to convince the girl into a love-relationship."you know it's time" He wants a definite answer"spare me the suspense" He already thinks that they are late for a love-relationship at the end "wait until you know it's time": he gets awared the upcoming no-answer and doesn't want to lose hope. so he says desperatly she can keep him in suspense and wait till she is sure. |
