Sufjan Stevens – You Are the Rake Lyrics 15 years ago
i think regardless it's a song celebrating a certain relationship, talking realistically about what it was, and expressing gratitude for the relationship's influence.

that being said, i'd like to mention that the tone of the song is very praise and worship sounding. i'm not saying this song is about God, just that it has the same aspects of a worship song - praising, harmonic, repetitive. worship songs tend to be sung in a group setting, so they are usually simple and allow for harmony, like the female accompaniment in this song.

i believe the metaphor of the rock and rake is pretty simple - a rock can symbolize stability and steadfastness, a rake can symbolize something that cleans up and reveals what is underneath. "you are the one when i watch myself" can mean that the subject of the song is important enough to his life to silently encourage him to be the best person he can be.

the cave image seems to allude to a physical relationship that originally occurred because it created comfort and safety and love, as most relationships provide in the beginning. but then the cave becomes cold, possibly alluding to the relationship's emotional demise. or, the demise of the safety and warmth. however, maybe it is the outside that became colder, making the "cave" that much warmer and needed.

really, this could mean so many things. it might not be about a romantic relationship at all, but a relationship with a mother or a god.

i'm definitely feeling curious about the subject being a mother figure. i wonder if anyone can see that as a possibility? cave isn't necessarily a sexual image...

Viking Moses – crosses Lyrics 16 years ago
i can't believe no one's commented on this song. it's so beautiful; really genuinely explains the complications of love, i think. without experiencing or having love in life, you're not really living. also, when love ends, life feels unbearable, or "gone." as for the next verse, love continues until the reality of life gets in the way, and it always does. so it's a catch 22. therefore, whenever love is possible, it should be experienced before it is lost or unattainable. i hope that wasn't too horribly confusing, and i hope more people get the chance to listen to this lovely song.

Adele – Best for Last Lyrics 16 years ago
i don't think its all that complicated, its just a scenario where she wants this person more because of the mistreatment, and at the same time she knows she shouldn't want it or need it but she still does - so there's the juxtaposition in the song from her being positive and in love, and on the contrary there's the negative side where she wants him to think she never wanted him in the first place; she used him. she desperately wants what she can't or shouldn't have. but then again, maybe i been hitting the pipe a little too hard.

Radiohead – Gagging Order Lyrics 17 years ago
this is a beautiful song - but like most radiohead songs, i think only thom yorke himself knows what his lyrics really mean. it could easily be about addiction/relationship, but that seems too literal for thom yorke. he could be talking about a specific instance in his life that we can't actually understand. i don't think anyone can say for sure.

Radiohead – Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors Lyrics 17 years ago
i really don't think that in order to make sense of this song you need to break down every line and take it in so literally.

to me, it seems the lyrics are referring to the situations we encounter in life. whether it be certain people or certain chances we may take - they always lead to something else in life.

there are some people with whom building a relationship with might change your life in negative ways, and some people who might change it in positive ways. there are many paths to follow in life, and they all lead to something different.

i think in all, the song is about how different situations and people in our lives can lead us into new experiences and we cant really know what's on the other side of the door unless we open it.

also, referring to the line "there are doors that let you in and out but never open" - there are people you may live with day to day, but never really know. or it could refer to how sometimes we just go through things in life but never really experience or know what it is that we are really doing or feeling.
