Yeah, I think the song was originally written about drug abuse, and how it controls your life, but I think the song has come to mean any inner demon that keeps you from being all that you can be |

Basiclly the 'sequal' to "Fight Fire with Fire" off of Ride the Lightning. That song was about nuclear warfare. "Blackened" is about nuclear winter, which would follow an all-out nuclear war. A much better song then "Fight Fire with Fire", but still not one of thier best, in my opinion. I believe that this was one of only four song in wich Jason Newstead got a writing credit for. When I saw them live, they used this as the opening song. |

By the way, on the album version during the lines "The gods are laughing, so take your last breath", in the background you can hear a deep, throaty chuckle, and evil sounding laugh. Is this not the same sound effect they used near the end of "Master of Puppets"? |

While Ride the Lightning is probably my favorite Metallica album, "Fight Fire with Fire" is one of my least favorite songs. The intro does sound cool, almost hypnotic, and the end, when they use the sound effect of the falling bomb, is pretty unique, and goes well with the point they are trying to get across. I just never could get past the vocals on this song. I'm glad Hetfield never really tried anything tlike that again. |

"Fade to Black" is a great song, though. A slower, softer song. Because of "Fade to Black" and the other Matallica ballads that have followed, Metallica is better then anyother metal band. Most other Metal bands are one trick ponies that can only play one type of song. |

Pretty excellent song. They have occasionally done the song entirely accoustic. Sounds pretty cool.
By the Way - faderulz!!period, accourding to the notes that come with the "Ride the Lightning" album , the lyrics are "Deathly Lost", not "Deathly loss" |

This song was Metallic'a first instrumental, which began the tradition of several good instrumentals in thier early days. These instramentals also set them apart from most other metal bands. "Fade to Black" being Metallica's first slower, more thoughful song was also a huge part of setting metallica above any other metal band |

Cool song, but definetly Metallica's weakest instrumental. "Orion" is a much better song, "To Live is to Die" had much more meaning, and the S&M version of "Call of Ktulu" sounded amazing. Whether Cliff was the best bassist or not is a moot point. In truth, he probably wasn't, but he was responsible for much of Metallica's early work, and his death had a huge impact on the band. |

Definetly one of thier best. A kick ass song with a fantastic intro. A great opening track for an unforgetable album! |
