| St. Vincent – Cheerleader Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Caveman7 got it right. With references to cheerleaders and "good times" with bad guys, holding bare bones and seeing America naked, well, you can't really knock anyone for assuming that this song is commenting on sex and relationships somehow. Can it be about something else? Of course. But strong evidence is there to suggest that Annie is writing about the dumb things girls can do to impress guys. | |
| Kid Cudi – Soundtrack 2 My Life Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
"The moon will illuminate my room and soon I'm consumed by my doom." As cliche as all hell as this line is, it's one of my favorites. Not to sound melodramatic, but I often stay up at night not thinking about "doom" so much as the meaning of life, what it would be like to not exist, etc., etc. Yet "doom" is a good word to sum it up. I get all philosophical and existential in my little room...so this really resonated with me :D |

| Kid Cudi – Soundtrack 2 My Life Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
"Ignorance is love and I need that shit." My interpretation: Sometimes love changes our whole perspective on life. It can make us so happy that we forget our troubles, or that the world is full of suffering. In that way, it seemingly makes us "ignorant" to the harsh realities of life. However, while it doesn't seem logical to have this escape mechanism, which is like closing our eyes when we don't want to see the gory parts of a movie, we need it. It's the human condition. You can rationalize and rationalize but in the end, everyone needs love. |

| Best Coast – Boyfriend Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I like all of Best Coast's lyrics. Sometimes I get tired of feeling like I need to be an expert on the New Literary Criticism to understand an indie song. | |
| Arctic Monkeys – Potion Approaching Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Damn near every song can be interpreted as a drug anthem. LYRICS: Mary had a little lamb, Little lamb, little lamb, Mary had a little lamb, Its fleece was white as snow Everywhere that Mary went, Mary went, Mary went, Everywhere that Mary went The lamb was sure to go It followed her to school one day School one day, school one day It followed her to school one day Which was against the rules. It made the children laugh and play, Laugh and play, laugh and play, It made the children laugh and play To see a lamb at school And so the teacher turned it out, Turned it out, turned it out, And so the teacher turned it out, But still it lingered near And waited patiently about, Patiently about, patiently about, And waited patiently about Till Mary did appear "Why does the lamb love Mary so?" Love Mary so? Love Mary so? "Why does the lamb love Mary so?" The eager children cry "Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know." Loves the lamb, you know, loves the lamb, you know "Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know." The teacher did reply INTERPRETATION: Mary's lamb is obviously COCAINE. White as snow=blow=Tony Montana's bleeding nostrils. Mary is the pusher who starts snorting coke recreationally before deciding to cash in by selling to her schoolmates. Even though it's illegal to sell drugs at school, Mary did it anyway 1. because she's addicted--everywhere she goes, cocaine is not far behind and 2. it makes the other children laugh and play, which only helps her gain ground socially and financially. The righteous teacher tries to intervene by enforcing stricter discipline on the druggies, but after a while, Mr. Narc realizes that he is powerless to curb Mary's habit and business. When it comes down to it, Mary is too physically dependent. She's reached the point of no return. The repetitious use of the phrase 'Mary had a little lamb' is meant to parallel the vicious repetition of addiction. The message is to remind us of the dangers of getting high on your own supply. By the way, I don't think this album is completely drug-inspired. I would hope not. There's enough of that stuff out there already. Were it not for the first two lines, I'd say this was a song about sex. |

| Arctic Monkeys – Cornerstone Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Wow. I liked the explanation for the pirate-themed bars. Good stuff. After hearing this for the first few times, I decided that the girl at the end is a prostitute, but the previous two aren't. It's like he gets more and more desperate as the tune progresses. First he goes up to two look-alikes, but when they realize he's being somewhat of a perv, they shake him off. The last girl lets him do it, though, because it's her job. "Sure, you can call me that, you can call me whatever you want." He finally achieves his goal, but this time it's for a fee. Pretty depressing if you think about it. |

| Arctic Monkeys – My Propeller Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I do not think this is a song about drugs. I feel like a lot of Arctic Monkeys songs criticize the 'party like a rock star' lifestyle. On that note, I don't think Mr. Turner would glamorize the kind of stuff he mocks in songs like "A Certain Romance." This is definitely a sex song. "Oil up those sticky keys" "A necessary evil" "I can't hold down the urgency" "I can't get it started on my own." He needs to get his propeller going. What does the propeller do? It gets spinning to get the helicopter UP! |

| St. Vincent – Now, Now Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Wow...I like the "rebel yell" argument. I never thought about it like that :) When I first heard this song a couple years ago, I thought it was about some kind of horrific breakup. Maybe I was just in a depressed mood at the time, but I thought that Annie was singing about the transition from meaning everything to someone to meaning nothing at all. I think the tone of her singing adds to that. That's why she compares herself to such seemingly disconnected things. She's not the little things; his mother's pet, a feather, the carpet-- because this person has pushed her out of his life completely. She also isn't the yellow brick street or atomic bomb--even if she were to show anger or lash out, she still isn't "anything at all" to him. I thought that the subject of the song said something particularly awful to her, which is why she says "you don't mean that, say you're sorry...I'll make you sorry," which I think is absolutely brilliant. |

| Katy Perry – Ur So Gay Lyrics | 16 years ago |

"I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf While jacking off listening to Mozart" Is this really what I think it's about? The first person to reply to this message with one reason why Katy Perry's music is relevant gets a prize. |

| Belle & Sebastian – You Don't Send Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This song reminds me of a specific type of relationship, one that I happen to be in right now. You used to like the person, you had some kind of falling-out, and now you're on very neutral terms with them. You aren't angry at them but you don't love them anymore. They just don't "send" you anymore=they are no longer interesting, exciting, inspiring. | |

...make "it" even better. Damn. I was hoping that I could write it all fast with no typos. Alas...no. |

| Amy Winehouse – Wake Up Alone Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is, in my opinion, the best and most underrated on the album. I recently heard that Amy won a songwriting award for Rehab, which I think is funny because Wake Up Alone is so much more poetic. I usually don't like it when people use the word 'visceral' to describe music, but in this case, it's appropriate. This song describes a situation that is completely relatable to anyone who has ever been heartbroken to the point of feeling physical pain. The lines '...seizing my guts' and 'the sleep catches up and I'm breathless' hit so hard. The added details (her drinking problem, the fact she's trying to busy herself to avoid thinking about it, etc.) make even better. Bottom line: This is the best song on the album as far as lyrics go. |

| Arctic Monkeys – Only Ones Who Know Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| That is, I'm jealous of the fact that Alex is so young and yet seems to know so much about people and can convey it beautifully. | |
| Arctic Monkeys – Only Ones Who Know Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Hey Redapple, I'm an apple as well but I wouldn't say this song is corny. I'm kind of in the situation that slightlysane pulled up from the interview; that is, in college and trying to figure out if there's a chance for something between me and another person in my dorm...so I agree with that interpretation and am really loving this song now. I'm jealous of Alex Turner's ability to describe people at such a young age. | |
| Interpol – Mammoth Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I like the knocked-up idea. From now on, that's how I'm going to think of it. :) "You're late" "Spare me the suspense" "Aching daddies" "We should dance like two fucking twins." If it's true, they should be celebrating. Don't understand the significance of a pawn shop, though. |

| I'm also pretty sure it's "them's the breaks." Everyone on the Interpol message board has been using that phrase lately. | |
| Interpol – Who Do You Think? Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| It seems to me that 9 of every 10 Interpol songs are inspired by the lead singer's girlfriend. I know that "I only call them..." could be interpreted in a thousand different ways, but it isn't unlikely that this one was also written with romantic thoughts in mind. The album is also called Our Love To Admire. | |
| Interpol – The Lighthouse Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This song is brilliant both literally and figuratively speaking. The eerie fading guitar effect seemingly channels a lighthouse as it scans over the ocean at night. When the sound is loudest, the light is brightest, almost blinding. Then it quickly slips away, just as the big bright spot would from vision. Beautiful. | |
| Interpol – Who Do You Think? Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think that this song is about a man suspected of cheating by his girlfriend. The two are in a fight over a suspicious telephone call. When the girlfriend asks 'who do you think that is there?", the guy responds reasonably by saying he only calls people back when he knows who they are and that he doesn't see them, in other words, he's not seeing another person. The line 'I always fall in these fights' suggests that he has these confrontations regularly, however, despite it all he still remains devoted to his girl. Also, I think that the line 'I know now not to swear' is 'I know now not to stare', which coincides nicely with my idea. |
