I also love it ... but it's not uplifting. About a farmer who's had bad times, had to sell out, joined a union, and trying to convince himself that everything's now going to be much better.
But you can hear in Richard Manuel's the desperation - the forced optimism. Somehow, we feel, it's not going to turn out as he says. |

I'm pretty sure it' about blue movies as suggested.
It seems to me the guy talking is a "Hollywood" producer/director who got sent photos from a wannabe actress ("I've seen your pin shot, I keep it with your letter"). Now she finds she's been hired for a porn movie, and he is trying to cajole her into being a bit more happy about it ("smile for the camera") and bring back the personality of her sample photos ("it will come back to you"). |

Has anybody noticed that, while this song is quite clearly about a drug trip, it works quite well on a deeper level as a description of a doomed space mission? |

Maybe not his greatest song - but getting close to it. But his ultimate set of lyrics - perfect! Forget the more obtuse lines of some of his more "poetic" songs. Here we have a simple-to-understand set of lyrics that calmly set out .... his bitter resentment at a relationship where he's given everything and got nothing in return. All in the context of what initially sounds like a beautifully tender serenade.
Wonderful irony! Wonderful song. |

I really don't have much idea about the meaning here, but it is one of TH's absolutely top songs - the rhythms, the textures and the great guitar solo.
Scatterbrain may be onto something. Most of the lines seem to talk about light/enlightenment or to darkness/obfuscation, so it may well be a comment on the power of media (television?) to enlighten us or delude us. But hey .... let's listen again. |

It's alove song - and a wonderful up-tempo exuberant one too. It doesn't matter that it was inspired by Paul's love for pot - it works just as well being sung to my girlfried Myrtle or my cat Fosdyke. |
