everyone is looking wayyy too far into the dress metaphor. If you look at Iron&Wine as a whole when he addresses love he often takes an innocent young love perspective of it. "Love is a dress that you made long To hide your knees" Is just the innocence (like a young girl who’s skirt hasn’t shortened yet) of self/ or perhaps in this case falling in love, simple as that. Just think of those knobby knees you get when someone you love makes you weak. And as you grow you become hesitant to show that vulnerability. In my opinon, its basically saying she’s trying to conceal her innocence/naivety/vulnerability I think the song as a whole is about a young girl he loves in some way who is growing into a woman. And the question "May I be weaved in your hair" is basically saying he wants to be there next to her. she grows=hair grows... weaved in her hair=weaved into her life very pretty sentiment to say to someone you love: I know your growing, but i know who you are, and i love you, and I want to grow with you |

I see this song differently than most Or more like I FEEL this song differently. The way the piano opens up the song, the delicate wording in the beginning reminds me/makes me feel like those moments when time stops. Not really, of course, but in your head. When you enter into this sense of solitude where its just you and your thoughts- reflecting. Life seems to move on around you but you feel like you have stopped (does that make sense at all?) I imagine there is this girl who has just said goodbye to a man. And she is reflecting on that moment, this man, the feelings, and all the endless questions that inevitably occur in a romance. It's just like the movies, I eat from the trees [[I think this eating thing is a metaphor for being consumed by/consuming love- just like the movies]] If I do not open the curtains then I cannot see [[if you don’t ask questions, and pull back the BLINDs (blindly in love) you can never truly see what’s occurring]] All the people run by My heart eats beats... [[I imagine her heart feels in tune to the beats of these passing people’s feet- hence the “ts-ts-ts-ts” in beat]] My heart eats love... [[just like she ate from the tree earlier- metaphor for love]] You are mistaken 'cause I do not bite [[shes is withdrawn from her surroundings right now, seemingly bitter, but she isn’t]] Over the Williamsburg bridge on a bike [[she’s riding a bike]] And if he loves me then why does he leave? [[this is the epic question she is asking herself. Can it truly be love if he would leave her?]] My heart eats beats... My heart eats love... I think the question should be the use of 'bar' I really think that there has to be something more to that then just meaning a social gathering place. I knwo i might be outlandish but does anyone happen to know the chords used in the song? I feel like that would make so much sense.. what makes the song so unique is its sound, perhaps the chords are "3 bars" apart or are they maybe singing 3 octives apart? i may be reading WAY to far into it but i think theres something more to it.. especially for it to be the title |
