i see this song in a different way. tell me if anyone agrees with me. this song is questioning the existance of God under the pretense of forgiveness. ok. basically he is saying that a lot of Christians do whatever they want because they know they can be forgiven. the first lines tell about a guy dropping his faith long enough to have sex with some girl. he believes that "no one watching over me" so he can do what he wants. the next morning he asks for forgiveness and such and feels redeemed "If it was just one night, then we would be relieved". geoff kinda mocks the hipocrisy of some people by saying "Holy, Holy, lift up your dress". there is contrast between religious hymn and sex showing how some people put up a front to appear religious. also the "hollow promises we’ll never keep" are promises to never do it again and stay religious but he can never stay religious if he can always be easily redeemed and forgiven. so geoff questions the existance of faith and God if people can be allowed to do evil things freely and still be "faithful". so basically he is begging to know if God is real at the end/ what do you think? |
