The first verse is, as most people here seem to recognize, definitely about a bad drug addiction and it is almost certainly NOT pot; pot doesn't create that kind of addiction. My assumption is that its about cocaine given that Conor Oberst has become rather notorious for his coke problem. |

Regarding the debate as to whether or not this song is about heroin addiction... Jeff Tweedy, the lead singer, is an admitted opiate addict; he's said in interviews that he has long been addicted to opiate painkillers such as percocet and vicodin... heroin is in the same class of drugs. Given that he is a known addict and given the feel of the song I think its quite likely that it is, in fact, about drug addiction. Anyone who has experienced... this kind of life is likely to agree. |

"Bring a mirror to my face" sounds like a very clear allusion to cocaine use, especially when followed by "oh, let all my memories be gone." Mirrors are a traditional surface to break up coke on. |
