Xrunner, That's hard to back up man.98% of historians believed Jesus' existed. you might be looking at the Bible as if it were just one big book written in a private area, that's not correct. Within the Bible you find books, that were collected into the cannon as the most reliable sources we have for Jesus. and when you apply criteria for authenticity you find that the New Testament is very reliable. Most historians, however, dont accept the miracles because their profession would be in danger if they did, but that's not evidence against the miracles in the New Testament.I'd say if the NT authors were going to make up some random story they wouldn't have included embarassing facts, suchas, Jesus not being able to perform miracles in his hometown, his family not even believing in him, Having Woman being the primary witnesses to his empty tomb(Woman's testimony in that society was considered worthless.)and him being publically executed(in that culture that meant he was a gailed messaih.),etc.this is just a very small portion scholars find the NT reliablw thouge, you should research into for it yourself though. But sorry If I came off as arrogant in my first post, It just saddens me when people claim that Believers are just emotional irrational and closeminded, and then those very same people turn around and spew anger at God, because they don't like how religion is being distributed, that's not a reason why one shouldn't believe in God.that's letting an irrelevant factor dictate your sentiments. It's closeminded to deny God because you don't like Christian people, it doesn't make you look openminded because you can curse at Jesus, that's putting on a front to look openmided.I'm not preaching anything, I just want people to realize how shallow this is, God really does loves us. Just think for yourselves, don't worry about the Christians that are making you mad-- they aren't God. |

| Relient K – Apathetic Way to Be Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song is probably comes from him observing all the things people around him do.people are filling their time being non-relective and conforming to popular trends that are fleeting and inevitably bring bad times, and he's saying that stuff really doesn't matter.he's encouraging the listeners to clean up their hearts and live with eternity in mind, instead of living like this life(that ends at the grave) is all they have. | |
| Relient K – Wit's All Been Done Before Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song is about becoming yourself, and not conforming to the things you see in the popular media. | |
| Atreyu – At Least I Know I'm a Sinner Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
The opening lyric"Lift up a stone and you will find him" is found in the Nag Hammadi text the "gospel of Thomas".Maybe he conforms to gnosticism.Personally, I think this song was unecessary and only thoughtless reaction to religious fundamentalism.I find it quite Ironic how people say living by a rule is bullshit, while not realizing they are themselves are making a moral pronouncements like this one:"we were given this life to live, Not exist under standards, Set by some bullshit rulebook." this is called moralizing.I think this generation is looking for a reason to against the way they've been brought to believe in God and this trend is getting rather silly.I'm not Judging hypocritically, I am just making an observation.people need to think more deeply about why they don't believe.Just because you don't agree with your church's fundamentalism or something bad has happened to someone you love. doesn't make God inexistant. It's time we as a culture ponder the existensial questions a little more and quit thinking that being rebellious to the idea of religion and calling it"bulshit" without compellin argument makes us look like independent thinkers. It doesn't. |

| I wonder how many of you have actually searched for the truth. I know many here have only gave up belief in God becuase of the way men have used God in order to control the ignorant and use God to bolster their image above others. But this isn't Jesus you'll.I would suggest your research legit Christian Scholarship and find a New Testament and study the claims and actions of Jesus. You'll be suprised at what you find. | |
| Thrice – To What End Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| There is alot being thrown around in here that isn't reflective of the song as a whole. The writer is not saying he ias a scientific materialist.Rather he is asking if this is the correct philosophical assumption why proceed on.Since common public(Even christians to my suprise) live as if this assumption were true he has wrote this peice to provoke thought of our existensial predicament in a materialistic universe. If death is the ultimate destiny of human beings and the universe as a whole then it doesn't matter if we ever existed or not. If our thoughts are just chemical reactions pre-determined by the external stimuli our brain recieves. Why get on here and debate passionately about anything?Noon'es throught would have any value to them.moreover, if this is true we don't even have the free-will to pick what we believe in which is self defeating if you ask me.because according to this doctrine "we believe in determinism because we were determined"lol. Some philosophers try to manuver their way around this by saying are mental states supervene are brains reactions, but causation is still a way one street.the brain causes are beleifs. But to sidestep this issue.let me continue in the previous direction of my post by adding that the search for truth and living in accord with that truth is pointless in ths worldview.Does it matter what one believes considering our destiny is unrelated to how we live or think? In this view Hitler didn't do anything 'Objectively" wrong. what he did is just unsociable relative to certain societies.when one gets blown up by bombs their atoms just rearrange themselves into something else. how can there be any intrinsic worth to atoms?have youi measured it in a testube? Also, let me add Certain atheist are constantly ranting Christians shouldn't waste their only lives believing in a God or else they would have wasted it. But in materialistic worldview there is no objective purpose to being here. so how could we waste a life. It's like being on a sinking ship with no hope of rescue:there really is no difference between the person who spends the 'moments' toturing people and the person who spends his time loving others. because all of the people and their thoughts crumble to death. Can we as humans live consistent witrhin this worldview? most of us try not to think to deeply about the big questions like this and instead fill our minds with distractions and trivialisms to avoid the the thoughtlesly accepted view of materialism.but when pushed to the logical conclusions of this view we wil find most conclude it is unlivable. It's time to quit hiding behind the themes and virtues passed through western tradition by Christianity and face up to your worldview. | |
| As I Lay Dying – Losing Sight Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| this song is very thought-provoking. It makes you realize that all of our thoughts, goods, morals and relative signifigance to alter ultimatlely means nothing if we "all' collectively lose them to death. If death is one ultimate destiny then everything is fading away, and really does not matter whether they happen or not. He asks in the end how could we live consistently this way? | |
| Norma Jean – The Longest Lasting Statement Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think this song is referring to the bodily resurrection that will take place at the second coming.our current bodies will be transformed as Jesus' was two thousand years ago. | |
| Norma Jean – Back To Hers Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| If these lyrics are correct? I assume it is speaking of christians that fall away from God "Hers,Shes and the like" in NJ songs usually refer to to world, evil or satan. However, I don't think these lyrics are complete. | |
| Poison the Well – Jesus Drove a Cadillac AKA Material Christ Lyrics | 17 years ago |

PE Says:"A god that existed forever IS an omnipotent god. And I do think it's an impossibility. It just sounds like something that can only come from the human mind, and not actually exist. EVERYTHING has to have a beginning, an omnipotent god is an impossibility. " But in order for anything to exist something(Namely a primary cause) must have always existed. If there was ever a point of nothing then nothing should exist9or should not exist.lol).Nothing has zero potentiality to create thefore soemthing has always existed. but this has to be personal I believe for reasons I have listed above.your argument would result in an infinite regress in which everything began to existand has causes, but every prior cause would be explained the same way as its effect therfore leaving us with no adequate explanation for the existence of anything. |

I forgot to review the song lyrics.lol. The song while i disagree with some of it is very true of mordern christianity.People have replaced the burning desire to experience and know God with trivialisms. We don't care about God anymore we care about our image and how look to the rest of the congregation and this is wrong and spiritually empty.Christ is so different from this and so opposed this sort of stuff in his own day. He ate with the sinners and outcasts who had been deemed hell bound and intrinsically valueless by the prevailing religious systems, and he let them know God loves them and if they searched from the heart of the existensial predicament and not engage in disbelief on behalf of what they've heard from the prideful they could find a loving relationiship with God.This is why Jesus in my eyes was very much revolutionary, as well as the messiah of Isreal and the Lord of all. |

I know this no place to debate the religion and science interface. But "Inviltrist' made some pretty bold claims! as if he were in acess to some sort of exclusive scientific knowledge that religious persons aren't able to comprehend.though I agree with him on evolution and it's evidences. to use this dogmatically as an argument for atheism is kind of pointless. but to deal with his major points. Inviltrist says:"I fail to see any elements of design in earth let alone the universe and I see no reason for there to be a "creator". As the well known question goes "Who created the creator". Most christians will answer "he always existed". Isnt that rather hypocritical? the truth is saying "god did it!" doesnt make sense of anything... it just makes it needlessly complex." Well obviously the current body of phycisists would disagree here. there exists in the universe finely tuned constants that are 'independent' of the laws of nature that make the evolution of life permissable in the first place which cries for explanation. Most scientist hold to a multi-verse theory to try and avoid the obvious design implied by the discoveries of these contstants. But just because there is a possibility of an infinite amount of universes(Which I believe is just ridiculous speculation) does nothing to lower the improbability of these constants 'Actually' existing in 'this' universe .you also make a mistake by saying recognizing god is as the best explanation of the design only pushes to question a step further because one would necessarily have to ask "What designed God?"(1) traditional Christian Theism has always held God to be eternal, and therfor making your objection irrelevant(2)In order to recognize an explanation as the best we don't have an explanation of the 'explanation'. You also say:"despite what you believe something does come from "nothing". it is a fact. Subatomic particles appear from "nothing" with absolutely no purpouse whatsoever. It is very possible the universe started in the same way. I suggest people research quantam physics for further info on this but needless to say things do come from nothing all the time... this is a fact." 1.I suggest you read the peer-reviewed astrophysic journals. Instead of listening to whoever is giving you inaccurate information. 2.There are many interpertations of quantam physics most being deterministic.you only give the copenghagen interpatation to support your view. 3.Granted this interpatation is correct it doesn't show "Something can come from nothing". the quantam vacuum is not 'nothing'.Rather it is a sea of fluctuatuing energy and the particles that come into existence 'Indeterministically' on this model have the duration of seconds in most cases.Standard big bang cosmology is the recognition of the universe caused out of 'literally' nothing, and this is absurd. The theist is much more honest to infer the personal God as the creator the cosmos. 4.You are the one who gets rather superstitious in saying the universe could have existed in another way prior to the observable universe.this isn't science.this is called "naturalism is explanatorily deffecient, So i better speculate!".This sort of view is compatible with oscillating model. but there is no known law of physics that would cause the universe to collapse and bounce back into expansion. Also, this doesn't avert the absolute the beginning of the universe because with each oscillation entropy increases, and if we extrapolate this backwards the entropy in each Oscillation decreases until we reach the singularity again.lol 5.Moreover if any parelell universe or 'matter pouch' existed eternally these things could not have caused our universe to exist in the 'finite' past. For illustration: freezing tempatures cause water to freeze. If freezing tempatures have existed eternally water wouldn't have 'began' to freeze but it would have to always be frozen infinitely along with it's cause.Since our universe 'began' to exist. The cause can not be infinite in events prior to our universe because we would have to exist eternally with our cause, that is unless the cause is a personal one that willed the universe into existence.God anyone? so arguing this way still doesn't avert the absolute beginning and origin of everything.these models show that universe began to exist and can potentially "reach" infinite as a limit.I think the philosopher William Lane Craig(google him) has shown an actual infinite is only something in our minds, not something that can be apllied to the real world. your problem of evil actually proves God's existence.Think about it. If there is a really an objective moral order that ought to be lived out then it is more plausible that these 'oughts' exist in the nature of God and and are expressed to the creatures in form of commands upon our conscience than to say objective moral values 'just exist'.If Objective moral values don't exist and there are no oughts this arguments loses it's power. If atheism is true we are trapped in relativism it seems to me. everything is social conditioning and personal preference.as for your free-will question. You mistakedly equivocate God's divine forknowledge with causality.God knows all future truths considering he is present in every moment in time(omnipresent), it is still ultimately our choices we are making.God knew in each feasible world some would 'freely' choose to deny him.So God providentially arranges a world in which those who 'freely' embrace him are at a maximum number. God could have created a world in which everyone accepts him, but I doubt the beings would be free. and since it's logically impossible to make someone freely do something I see no inconsistency here in this problem and God's attributes. (This is getting way long, also sorry for the typos.) have a good one! |

| Relient K – Let It All Out Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I'll interpet parts "We're so scared to find out what this lifes all about,so scared were gonna loose it not knowing all along thats exactley what we need?" this basically means how we resist God and try to keep our lives the way we know them to be safe..Instead of just throwing away our life(blindly) and having confidence God will fill it back up more wholesome and meaningful. "And you said I know that this will hurt But if I don't break your heart then things will get worse If the burden seems too much to bear Remember The end will justify the pain it took to get us there" this part represents what gods saying to theissen telling him to mnhave patience and stay with me and Theissen allowing god to kill his old ambitions.Theissen now finds his self indifferent from the old him and is hurting but god says the end(Which is theissen going to heaven)will justify the pain it took to get us there(meaning no pain is really bad enough to give up your eternity for... this is basically a surrender. "When I go down" shows the outcome of this song It seems to me theissen makes this so his fans will know how to surrender themselves |
