Brilliant song! The way the notes dance with the lyrics give it a very chilling, introspective tone. Some minor changes to the lyrics: "If she were here now she wouldn't understand" - she's an infant and cannot comprehend the notes/lyrics "I'll be the rich one this time / And next time it'll be you" - implying he's going to make money from his performances... "and next time you'll be richer, you'll be taller" - just a minor change |

I think mcdong2007 is spot on with this analysis. First, I will start by saying I believe the lyrics are "we've been watching you with oval eyes," which would support what mcdong has said. Basically, this is part of Trent's fictitious future he has created through the entire album of Year Zero (a television series of sorts is slated for 2010) where the world has reset into a 1984-like democracy. I believe this song is an extraterrestrials' opinion of the way we have lived our lives and used our land much like a parasite uses its host. And now, to save the world, they are coming to intervene. |

I'm going to take this in a different direction: I believe this song is political. Cold War Kids are using the analogy of a robber or thief to represent the government leeching off of its citizens. They explain in the song how they rob from the "blind" people of the nation much like a robber would. However, "not me, I'm knockin" implies that they are not trying to hide it; i.e., taxes. The catch is, the people of the government are citizens as well: "don't think I don't know sympathy / my victims in my shadow / starin back at me" where the victims in "my" shadows are themselves. |

The wheelchair interpretation is a riot! Kudos to you for thinking outside the box (way outside)! The French part is complete jibberish - it's just a woman babbling french nouns, like "chair, lettuce, carrots, bathroom," etc. |

This song is about getting old, and the decision old people are confronted with when they get old: “Should I give up?” People you love / Will turn their backs on you / -- refers to how old people are neglected and seen as a burden. You'll lose your hair / Your teeth / -- things that occur when someone gets older. Your knife will fall out of its sheath / -- this is a very clever line, alluding to someone unable to get an erection; the sheath is the condom. This is a very clever song, and one of my favorites. |
