I'm so glad I found the lyrics to this song. It's beautiful, as is most of their music. Sam seems to incorporate religion in a lot of his music, and I think the meaning behind this particular song is about suffering. More specifically, the suffering of children in the world that came from god leaving man to watch over himself (or, as the song seems to point out, destroy himself). In some of the lyrics he seems to be making references to war and violence (with bullets and pages of trade magazines), and also I think that he is making a reference to the role of women in some parts of the world (if god made her eyes for crying at birth). I could be making a wild guess with that second part, though that is how I've interpreted the song. Overall I'm not sure whether I think the song is meant to lament all that is going on, or show that despite it all the boy and the girl still have hope (the girl finding a bird in the snow, as well as the boy finding both the coin, and making a wish with it). I think perhaps a little of both. |
