Carl Orff – O Fortuna Lyrics 18 years ago
oh yeah, and the students and clergy (goliards as they called themselves) who wrote this were defrocked monks and minstrels... a lot of what is written throughout carmina burana is humorous hymns to gluttony and gambling as well as sex and other such subjects... Sorry if my writing is poor, i'm sick and merely putting all this in out of boredom, and a feeling that maybe somebody will stumble across this, find it interesting and then perhaps another soul can find their way into the world of great music. A world outside of the pop bands that litter these pages and will be all but forgotten within ten years (this piece itself is over 100 years old already). Oh well, this is all I'll say about it. If you want to know more, do some research, find the score, it's well worth it to have something like this in your arsenal of knowledge. Arm yourself well, you don't want to bring a knife to a gun fight, so make sure you have a wide array of weaponry. And I invite anybody to expand or ammend any of what I have said.

O Fortuna pretty much the opening and closing movement in Carmina Burana (1937) which was based on the Carmina Burana poems compiled by Johann Andreas Schmeller in 1847. The poems themselves were written by students and clergy around 1230. Anyway, that's pretty much where it comes from in a nutshell.

I was first introduced to this song through and Audio Bully cover (which was pretty great itself) Love the song, and as to the whole debate about Kill Bill I have a couple of comments

First, this is SONG meanings... please don't polute the discussions with witless conversations about cinematic crap (I wasn't really a fan of the kill bill movies myself)

Second... Though I didn't like the movies I must side with the fans on this one especially when it comes to EvolGRE's comments. It's a freakin' movie for christ sake! Movies are all set up on a willful suspension of disbelief. The ability to set aside regular rules of physics, laws, or other widely held beliefs and princepals to accept the movie or play as entertainment. That's all it is. Entertainment. Nobody ever said anything in the movie was possible. I'd even say that Tarentino went out of his way to use moves and were obviously fictional based on the old Kung Fu movies that use similar moves. It's all based on the legend of the ninja ideal. Ninjas are almost nothing but legend. They were dudes in black suits that hit weapons in their houses in all sorts of places and had escape tunnels set up so they could "vanish" there was nothing magical about them. They were just really really good at martial arts and the art of the escape. The idea that no american blond woman could learn this is pretty absurd. Anybody could learn any of the ninja "skills" with a little practice. With a lot of practice, you could actually be good at it. Grow up. People are entitled to their opinions, so don't go forcing yours on people.

Iron & Wine – Carousel Lyrics 18 years ago
Yeah, this song is actually track 4 on the new album, not sure why it shows up on the myspace page with house by the sea playing instead, though... I've noticed it as well. This being one of my favorite songs off the new album, that kind of disappointed me. ( i never claimed i could spelle) The haunting effects of the way he sings the song and the guitar, it's just beautiful. That's all I really had to say, sorry to have wasted your time ;)

A Perfect Circle – The Noose Lyrics 18 years ago
And on that note, here's what it means to me.

To me it's about the whole recovery idea. Somebody went through recovery and is now wearing the "halo" as in they are now clean and most likely self righteous (as is usually the case) one of the twelve steps is rectifying things that you did against others while you were strung out. To me when he says "Not to pull your halo down... but i'm more than just a little curious how you plan to go about making your amends to the dead..." it's all about him having the attitude of "yeah it's great that you wanna be nice now, but what about people who od'ed or you just can't find now, how ya gonna make it up to them?" To me it's all about putting somebody self righteous in their place.

also the lines "Recall the deeds as if
They're all someone else's
Atrocious stories " also about the the smug attitude of some people in groups like AA who will talk about how bad off they were but make it sound like they were a completely different person. Yeah, they've changed, but it's still them that did all that. By making themselves distant from it like that they have more room to cast judgement on other people.

Yeah, to me this whole song seems like a tongue in cheek way of telling somebody to just shut up.

oh sweet god damn clutch songs mean different things to different people. Don't be a douche we're here discussing what we think the meaning is. Jeezus.

oh shit... When it comes to the idea of religion, I don't like it personally. Anybody who feels certain there is (or isn't) a god is equally dogmatic. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, though. And yeah, I agree it's probably about ice. It's funny how "religious" ice makes some people. I know quite a few meth heads that can quote scripture frontwards and back and tell you all about their religious theories while sticking a needle in their arm. It's funny as hell really to see...

Lou Reed – Heroin Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow James1234 you must've never tried it yourself or you just don't get it. I did heroin for years as well as speed and a whole bunch of shit. Anything I could put into my arm. I didn't get that way because it made me feel like shit. If you put an ounce of thought into what you said you'd realize people become addicted because it makes them feel good. A couple times shooting up I actually came. That's right the high was so much that I ejaculated without even touching my penis. Now normally when something bad happens your body doesn't react this way, you piss instead at worst.

At the same time though I must add on a disclaimer. While the high is great (and that is what Lou is singing about) there will come a point when you are pretty much a slave to the drug and that's when you start getting sick all the time 'cause you can't find any. And laying there shivering with a fever isn't cool. Not to mention the first time people shoot heroin it is very common to get sick due to the gag reflexes being triggered by the opiate. Anyway... Drugs are bad, mmkay?

first off the "Message read on the bathroom wall
Says, "I don't feel at all like I fall" I just always thought it was funny to think he was stating he doesn't feel like sh!t. I mean, honestly, what falls in bathroom stalls... other than that I agree that the song is overall about the growing urban jungle that's choking the life out of the beauty around it. We are building a desert of concrete.

Modest Mouse – Doin' the Cockroach Lyrics 18 years ago
I used to do a lot of drugs and we always said "doin the cockroach" referring to someone who was flopping (overdosing) especially on speed. cause their arms and legs shake and twitch like a cockroach on its back.

The heaven and hell line just made me think of an overdose it's a mixed feeling... you feel high, but you feel horrible and scared. he's using existentialism to describe the feeling of overdosing in that he doesn't believe in the idea of an afterlife or of overdosing but he fears them as well... nobody doing drugs ever believes they'll ever really overdose (especially with speed cause you gotta do a lot at once)

the lines about a doctor and lawyer to me is a lot like what others have been saying about them being the same but is also more about how even doctors and lawyers do drugs and the cash thief (drug dealer) taking your money. You could go deeper about the economics of the drug world and how if you travel back enough doctors and lawyers drive the prices up, but thats a whole other book.

Back in the Metro
Ride on a Greyhound
Drunk on the Amtrack
Please shut up!

when shooting coke there's a sound that comes like a train is just driving through your skull. To me drunk on the amtrack is all about shooting cocaine. And most junkys keep a stash on them that they'll use before getting to their source so they won't be all tweaked out and desperate. So riding the greyhound (to your dealer) drunk on the amtrack (so you won't be needing it as badly when you get there and thus cause him to think he can raise the price on you)

Another rider
He was a talker
Talking about TV
Please shut up!

another rider... somebody else who was doing drugs with him and was one of those guys who gets high and talks nonstop about the most trivial and meaningless things especially if you're the dreamer who just wants to sit back.

This one's a crazer
Day-dreaming disaster
The origin of junk food
Rutting through garbage

the guy who is always dreaming up new schemes to get more. Junk food and rutting through garbage go hand in hand as somebody who will dig through dumpsters for food.

Tasty but worthless
Dogs eat their own shit
We're doing the cockroach, yeah

To me tasty but worthless is the drugs. They feel good for a while, but they don't last, they're worthless. Dogs eat their own shit is about living in your own filth and stooping to levels that just make you another animal. Even though i was a junky sometimes i just felt like a dog or something as i was digging around for anything.

One year
Twenty years
Fourty years
Fifty years
Down the road in your life
You'll look in the mirror and say
"My parents are still alive!"

As a junky, you forget your family... someday you'll wake up and realize they're still there, and maybe they still care even. it may be soon, it may be too late...

You move your mouth
You shake your tongue
You vibrate my eardrums
You're saying words
But you know I ain't listening

Nobody can tell a junky to quit. Friends, family, everybody tries, but nothing will work, it's up to them.

You're walking down the street
Your face
Your lips
Your hips
Your eyes
They meet
You're not hungry though

to me this is about the point you reach where you really start looking like shit. You cheeks and eyes are sunken (meeting) and every bone seems to stick out but you're still not hungry you just want more.

Well, late last winter
Down below the equator
They had a summer that would make you blister

This to me is about dry spells where you can't get the drug you want. It's not always available and sometimes you just have to hurt until things cool down (cops watching less closely) and its available again.

Oh, my mind is all made up
So I'll have to sleep in it

this is the equivalent to "you've made your bed now sleep in it" He's set his mind to this life style and he feels he has no escape so he says he'll just sleep in it (live with it)

I'm not the kind of person who thinks all songs are about drugs but like i said that's what we always called overdosing. And I lived a life like what I described, so it was easy for me to make such a connection. That and based on other modest mouse lyrics it's obvious he's done speed. "styrofoam boots/it's all nice on ice, alright" ice is slang for methamphetamines.
