I love this song. With that said, the guy in the song is an asshole and he knows it. Beginning with the first verse, it's clear that the guy is just there and doesn't want to be there. I get the feeling that he cheated by the line "I don't recall, me and mistakes." Also, the line "I'm not looking for love, but it's hard to resist" is a reference to his affairs. "Poison in my head, gun love hurts" I think shows his state of mind when cheating--he knows its wrong, but does it anyway. As for the second verse, his girlfriend is his "dream" girl. She's the only one. I like to think of the line "These arms are mine" as referring to his girlfriend's arms. In other words, he's possessive of his girlfriend since she's his dream girl, afterall. Even after they break up, despite who she's with, he knows that they'll always share that intense connection ("You're made for me"). I love how honest this song is. |

To me the song is about her leaving him. When she says that she has to get "what's mine," it means that she has to find someone who is available--somone that's hers and hers alone--not him. Hence, "she had to do what's right." She's tired of being his doormat, even though he portrays their situation as her being the bad guy and him being a little angel. She's tired of him not stepping up to the plate and doing what's right, i.e., making a decision which one he wants to be w/. So she made the decision for him. Also, I think she has a lot of sympathy for his girlfriend. She talks repeatedly about how she was jealous from the start. She knows what she was doing was hurting someone else. The part "what she did to us was tragic" may have several meanings. One being that the gf gave her bf an ultimatum, but he still couldn't choose and was still seing the author, which is why the author did the choosing for him. Another meaning might be just the whole being in the way of their love ("what we had was magic"), but ultimately weighed too heavily o nthe author's conscious. |

Chelsea is a dependent girl, who he is not really into. She keeps trying to rope him in, but he hates that about her. He doesn't quite understand why she's so into him since he's kind of a douchebag to her. She just sticks around like a pathetic dog, which is why he pities her. Tina is another girl at a bar/gig who he finds very attractive and gets lost on the whole "what's your name?" routine when meeting someone. The more into Tina he seems, the more angry that Chelsea becomes. Tina may also be Chelsea's friend that she brings. Hence, when he says "though she's not my kind of friend," what he means is that he'd like to be more than just friends w/ Tina. Tina is not just one of his guy friends. That's my take on it at least. |

Jackson Browne, a friend of Glenn Frey's, drove to the Southwest and was enchanted by the beautiful women driving pickup trucks. He began writing the song, but became frustrated and wasn't able to finish it. Soon after his return to LA, Frey asked to see it and take a crack at finishing it. At the same time, David Geffen had just sold his label, Asylum (which the Eagles and Browne were on the artist roster), and the Eagles were a little upset w/ the music industry. The song, in part, makes somes references to the music industry--the constant pursuit and selling out. |

I believe this song to be about a girl who has emotional issues, hence the monsters. These monsters may also be manifested in physical/mental/sexual abuse of the girl, which would explain the line about the bruise and fratricide. She contemplated or attempted suicide, but it didn't work out. She realizes that she is not the monster but rather the guy is. So now she is contemplating killing the guy, who is her brother or like a brother, by placing an ad that she knows he'll respond to. Another theory is that perhaps its a transvestite/cross-dresser. A guy who is now a girl. His life as a man no longer exists. Yet, he is not accepted by the public. Hence, the line "whiskey-plied voices cried fratricide." The "drill a tiny hole into your head" line is a reference to forcing the other guy to suck his dick. |

| I think it's about acquaintances that became sexually involved. The guy thought he was a pro at pleasing women; yet, through being involved w/ this woman, he learns that the other women must have been faking it. IOW, he's not that great. Because the relationship is based on sex, she's more apt to be honest w/ him about his abilities. Nonetheless, they spend time together and both grow to love eachother, yet, neither will say it. Hence, the French verse. Ultimately, she's had it w/ him. He's stuck in this middle part where he loves her, get jealous, and wishes for the sake of his own ego to be able to please her, but isn't mature enough to let go of his former life as a playboy. | |
