| Flogging Molly – Salty Dog Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| For those who can't follow, the pirate has a drinking contest against "demons," which he wins. He then escapes some sort of law ("These boots will never fill her jail") only to be caught by Cortez, who sinks his ship, captures him and hangs him. | |
| Fountains of Wayne – Mexican Wine Lyrics | 16 years ago |

This song depresses me. Maybe I'm weird, but it seems to me like the lyrics are saying that sad, lonely people die all the time and no one even cares. Great message. It's also an obvious allusion/subversion to the common poetic usage of the sun as a metaphor for a true love. "It is the east, and Juliet is the sun" etc. Even if people die, it won't be the end of the world. |

| Fountains of Wayne – Bright Future In Sales Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
These lyrics are quite noticeably wrong, especially because most of the words are clear in the song (I'll give you that a few of them need a couple listens.) Most importantly, a lot of the meanings are significantly changed. "Could live like this forever" should be "Can't live like this forever." "Don't wanna quit" should be "Don't wanna fail." "And this time" should be "If there's time." It's not about sarcastically talking about his future and wanting to just drink it away. It's about a guy who seriously wants to quit drinking because it's ruining his life, but can't stop. |

| The Decemberists – Sixteen Military Wives Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I can't help but interpret the music video as a sort of parody of a parody. The "Bully USA" is so over the top that they can't possibly think this is what the US actually does. The song itself I didn't think was about politics at all but more about the news. Academy awards, soldiers dying in combat, cannibals eating people, and the public watches it with the same reaction: La-di-da-di-da. "I don't care as long as I'm entertained," that's what I got as the message. I do admit that the chorus kind of suggests it's about American foreign policy but I took it to refer alternatingly to the media then the public: America (media) can America (public) can't say no America (public) does America (media) says it's so (says to do it) |

I also got the suicide vibe. I feel, however, that the point of the story is that the suicide didn't help him at all - He can't escape from his guilt or his job even in death, or possibly that people only remember him for his job, and not for his love, which is what he'd prefer to be remembered by. |

| Menomena – Evil Bee Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Just to be difficult, the video does NOT have the bee escape - It is the dying bee dreaming of escaping, and becoming a machine used for its original purpose (making light) once more. | |
| They Might Be Giants – The Cap'm Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
It's about a guy imagining he is a "cap'm" while watching TV. The "helm" is his couch. He is very pathetic, and he realizes this around the line "This button here is the fast-forward button." Whoever is talking to him distracts him from being depressed by complimenting his hat. |

| They Might Be Giants – The Mesopotamians Lyrics | 17 years ago |

This is a clear parody of pop "introduction" songs where the band describes themselves. In addition, it's comparing how we look on history to how we look back on old music. |

Firstly, I have to say that the lyrics above have a few errors. I have the CD and listen to this song all the time, and that is not what the words are! In fact, this set of lyrics is copied directly from another site with all of the errors intact. Secondly, I greatly enjoy listening to this song, its one of my favorites. |
