Being in the military, I know that a lot of your ideas about war are colored by your own biases. We have laws in war where we CANNOT attack certain things (such as medical personnel, hospitals, civilians, schools, etc.) And when they are, these actions are just as much met with punishment in the military as they are in the U.S justice system. Just because individuals have done what they thought was right for their country does not mean that was backed by our country. If you care so much about American policy, why aren’t you voting? Why don’t you know policy? Why don’t you even know the names of our leaders beyond the overused target, the president? He is not the sole maker of policy. To tell you the truth, I think SOAD was probably thinking about the Armenian genocide when they wrote it. If not, the genocide may unconsciously color their own ideas of American warfare. |

I guess I’m one of those “poor” dumb people who decided to enlist and fight for her country. Thanks, that makes all the sacrifices I have made, and all the people that I know have died, look like it was all a waste. I don’t appreciate it. I think until you actually do something like this you can’t really talk about why we do it. And it has nothing to do with American policy or the restraints that a president must make policy under. (A president does not equal a god, he is one person. You cannot say that he has made everything wrong and that he alone is at fault, if there is any to place for this war.) I like a lot of what SOAD has to say, but if this song means what everyone says it does, then it is one of the few I cannot agree with. Those that talk about us joining for education of money is true, I have. But I can tell you not many of us have not thought about going to Iraq when we joined. I can tell you from my perspective that I will do it because it is my job and I will go there with what I believe in and not what the popular American ideas are. I will go to defend those who are innocent and make sure terrorists will have no means to terrorize us or their own people any more. And I know that’s why the majority of us “poor, dumb” military members fight. We fight so you, who have time to criticize, can keep living in a country that doesn’t have to worry about the amount of bombs that Iraq does. Who knows and even cares of the bombs in Iraq that fall on innocent Iraqis? You sure don’t.

If not for a specific riot, this song speaks of American culture where the weak are left undefended, with well-trained parrot-police indiscriminately wiping up the “scum”, of which of course there is more scum than regular people—injustice and the uncaring for the innocent abound who live in American streets that are as war-torn as any middle-Eastern country. |
