Soundgarden – Superunknown Lyrics 9 years ago
@[D_Psi4or:14516] Yeah, it implies that you don't want it to happen, but in my pov it's not that something is forcing that upon you, but rather it's a natural consequence of you becoming more critical. You don't follow that road consciously but, when you realize, it's stolen your old ways of thinking.

PS: I accidentally flagged your comment! Sorry about it. I'm looking for a way to undo it, but it seems there's no way to...

Soundgarden – Superunknown Lyrics 9 years ago
@[D_Psi4or:14497] The song tells us that we are free to see things from different points of view, and that our point of view won't automatically invalidate another. So we can all choose the meaning that we want to believe.

Anyway, that's the greatness about songwriting. The song may be about jellybeans and unicorns for what we know, but it's written in a way generic enough for everyone to come up with different ideas they get from it, because everyone has gone trough different stuff and so sees and feels and believes in the song; and sharing this thoughts only makes everyone's opinion even richer.

There's a chinese proverb that goes:
"If two man walking on a road, each with one bread, cross their paths and exchange their breads, they leave with one bread each.
If two man walking on a road, each with one idea, cross their paths and exchange their idea, they leave with two ideas each."

Soundgarden – Superunknown Lyrics 9 years ago
I think it's about the process of you mind getting out of the normality i.e. beginning to think for it's own opposed to following the general, the 'normal way' (in sense of being the norm, the conventional way).

"Humnas are social animals" and being so constantly need social validation, need to be sure if what they do, how they see, feel, believe is the way the others do, so they can feel part of that group, part of society, part of humanity as a healthy and 'normal' individual.

When you begin being critical and not simply taking as true what the common sense is, people will disagree with you when you speak your mind, because if you have a different point of view than the 'normal' one, that makes you a black sheep, the one that thinks or feels or believes different. And in the moment you become different, you become the *unknown*.

"Alive in the superunknown, Alive in the superunknown"
For me the the *superunknown* means falling into an unknown reality where you no longer have that social validation of 'normality', because you mind started seeing things from new points of view. At that point you'll be alive in the superunknown: the same way people see you as something different, you see everyone else as different than you; and considering you've lived your entire life as a part of that big community, falling into this new reality is quite overwhelming.

"First it steals your mind and then it steals your..."
First it's stolen you mind (your 'normal' way of thinking) and your soul (your sense of life) is left in the superunknown as a consequence.

"If this isn't what you see / It doesn't make you blind"
That's the point where you'll have to accept that if you understand something differently, it doesn't mean you're failling to understand it;

"Yea, if this doesn't make you feel / It doesn't mean you've died"
If your emotions respond differently, it doesn't mean you have emotional issues.

"If you don't want to be seen / Well you don't have to hide"
Even if that new reality takes you down and you don't want to show that you think different so you don't have to feel different, you don't have to isolate yourself.

"And if you don't want to believe / Well you don't have to try to feel alive, yea"
This one is quite full of meaning. If you don't want to believe the message the song is true, you don't have to, the same way if you don't want to believe anything that 'normality' tells you, you don't have to believe. You can *feel alive* (i.e. feel normal again) if you accept living in the *unknown* (having different opinions) (this verses are later complemented beautifully by the 3rd and 4th verses of the fourth strophe after the verse).

"If this doesn't make you free / It doesn't mean you're tied"
If this new way of seeing the world doesn't make you feel free, it doesn't mean your you're being limited by it ,the same way as any other ideas.

"If this doesn't take you down / It doesn't mean you're high"
As opposed to that, even if another point of view doesn't make you rethink your own, it doesn't mean yours is the absolute one. Don't kid youself thinking that you've became the greatest mind of the century just because you see things differently.

"If this doesn't make you smile / Yea, you don't have to cry"
Even if being in the superunknown (or having a different opinion about anything) doesn't feel good, you don't necessarelly have to feel bad about it. Use you ability to see things from other points of view and find the bright side. Or don't. But just don't feel lost just because you don't get validation from others.

"If this isn't making sense / Yea, it doesn't make it lies, oh"
Now this two lines wrap everything up so greatly. Getting back to the last two verses before the first chorus ("And if you don't want to believe / Well you don't have to try to feel alive, yea"): you don't have to believe anything to feel alive again; BUT it's not only because you don't believe or see or feel that it's invalid, or less valid or less real than any other ideias or point of view you have.

This is the point where the song tells you to accept that everything is relative to the way each of us see or feel or believe, and that makes, in fact, everyone different to each other, everyone a black sheep to each other, living us all in the superunknown.

"Get yourself afraid"
Realizing that you make you afraid of how things will go from now on
"Get yourself alone"
and you'll feel isolated in your mind, as wrapping your mind around anything is something that happens exclusive inside your toughts.
"Get yourself contained"
But as you accept this new idea, that fear will slowly go away
"Get yourself control, control"
and you will get back in control fo yourself

[solo representing you rising from that bad experience stronger than before]

"Alive in the superunknown"
Now you're trully alive in the superunknown

"First it steals your mind and then it steals your
First it steals your mind and then it steals your
First it steals your mind and then it steals your soul"
After all that process of changing the way you think that left your soul alone, it's also taken your soul; meaning now you can not only think differently, but also feel alright about it as you accepted that there's no 'normal' and that you don't have to be entirely 'normal' to feel alive.

Queens of the Stone Age – The Bronze Lyrics 18 years ago
I just have to say...

I FUCKIN LOVE THIS SONG!!!!

Ok. Now, the lyrics.

Waiting under things that rise in the morning?
Sun, day, work, breakfeast, sheets, bed..
Or maybe the begginning of something.

"The more you found the less you been around"
"I went for gold, but only got the bronze" - Nick
Like you left someone or something to find what
you wanted. And the more you find the more time
it took you. And the less time you spent where you
wanted.

PS: this song is much older than Stone age
complications. On you tube there's them playing
@ bizarre festival '98. on Stage only Josh, Niick and
Alfredo Hernadez. Not only the guitar, but bass and
drums are fuckin amazing... Never saw josh so concentrated on playing.

Queens of the Stone Age – River In the Road Lyrics 18 years ago
The "parade drumming" and the "marching in row"
makes me fuckin think of an army or something.
He wouldn't use this if the song hadn't got something
to do with.

The second part has got a nice controverse.
"Avert the childrens eyes, Forget left untold
Don’t look back to see
The blood River in the Road"
"Get revenge with my Blood"

Do not let the children know, but get revenge?

Sounds like a dead soldier remmembering his
sacrifice and how it was just forgotten, as his
body rotting in the vine. After he snaps out of
traveling in memories, he asks for vengeance.

"Grab what slips your mind & what your memory won’t hold"

I can be like people forced to run from their
homes, leaving their memories. But that's not something you'd think while running from
monsters marching in a row... So maybe its the
dead soldier trying to make people remmember
him.

Queens of the Stone Age – Regular John Lyrics 18 years ago
"Who are you girl?
Who are you boy?"

They don't know each other.
So I think the ex-girlfriend thing doesnt fit.

"any time and any place
I'll just hang around"
"Regular John"
"where's your daddy now
I heard he ran away"

For me it sounds like the prostitute stuff is the point.
Regular costumer, broken home, any time ANY PLACE.

Queens of the Stone Age – Mexicola Lyrics 18 years ago
This "you only live once" stuff is very Josh...

I just wonder what trouble he was getting into.
I still don't get most of the song, like the dogs
and livers. Fuck! The songs are all so ambiguous,
makes you think of lots of things. Thats what I
like the most about their music.

Queens of the Stone Age – A Song For The Dead Lyrics 18 years ago
For me it sounds like the Death.

"Come on, let's go drivin
Come on, let's take a little ride
That's the study of dying
How to do it right"

The study of dying is this "ride" (life)
and Death is calling you to take the ride
cause "It's late enough to go drivin"
This "late enough" could be the birth
(the whole life's a study of dying)
orthe start of the end of life.

And "If you're bet in the noose"
"I'm holding the noose"

That voice of Mark sounds kinda Death to me.
