Plainsong - without a doubt, sends shivers down my spine everytime I hear it. It reminds of being 16 (14 years ago) and being 'in love' with someone who never knew I was and imaging this was about us in a state of love and bliss. Absolutely beautiful. And as the previous comments suggest, sets the scene for an amazing LP - a journey that not only endears, but disturbs and warms at the same time. |

This is without a doubt my favourite song of all time; just thinknig about it makes me tingle. It still sounds just as fresh and timeless as it did the first time I heard it (about 13 years ago!). From the opening bars to the surreal and desperate sounds of the 'crashing' or 'breaking' that float in, in the first 30 seconds or so, to the later middle 8 (bridge) - this is music at its upmost sincere, emotive, uplifting and direct. Though I acknowledge the parallels to Ian's epilepsy; for me this has never been the spirit of the song. For me the musicality, the urgency of the vocal and the desperation in the lyrics, are what get me every time. I've not tried to fully 'understand' what the song's about for many years - i just know that somehow it strikes a powerful chord and melts and energises me everytime. Ian, regardless of his flaws, was a lyrical genuis... |
