I don't think this is about death, per se. "Le petit mort", or the little death, is a French metaphor for the orgasm. That goes well with "you read me like a book that's fallen down between your knees, please let me have my way with you."
When he says, "you and I can shake of this mortal coil", I think he is suggesting that they could enjoy a "little death" together.
Basically, he's begging her for sex, and telling her that there's nothing wrong or dirty about it. "It's only natural..." |

Though not as good as the original poem, it stays pretty close to it, and if it gets people interested in the poet, that's a good thing, isn't it? |

This song has baffled me for years, but I've solved the mystery. It's from an English folk tale that may actuall be based on real events. See link below. By the way, it was not in the hills of Spain, but England doesn't really rhyme with cave. The rest of the song is quite true to the story.

I believe it's about Natalie Merchant's decision to not continue with the group. She went west, following bigger and better things, while the remaining band with John and Mary stayed around NY state. |

| Fleetwood Mac – Tusk Lyrics

From Wikipedia:
The name for the album Tusk was inspired by a giant mammoth tusk in the museum of a small town called Saffron Walden, in Essex, England. The band saw it while touring and "tusk" became a running joke over the tour. |
