Vampire Weekend – Cousins Lyrics 15 years ago
Just occurred to me --it's probably actually an article or interview the music journalist is gonna type up, since he just sat down with 'the smart one' from the band.

Vampire Weekend – Cousins Lyrics 15 years ago
"You and the smart one sit outside of their sight,
In a house on a street they wouldn't park on at night."

'this one is hard. perhaps the "smart one" refers to the Ivy League school they all attended? and the house on the street could mean something a bit scary or unknown because they wouldn't park on it at night. as in vampire weekend does different (and awesome) things with music that some people find a bit strange or different or unknown.'

I think since "they" in the first line refers to VW's critics (or at least in your interpretation it does, and I think you're right), then it probably does here too. Basically, the people criticizing Vampire Weekend for the way they describe affluence in their lyrics (rather than poverty) are the same people who are afraid to go to neighborhoods with low-income housing. Basically they're calling these people hypocrites or posseurs, or both.

"If an interest in culture, you should be lining the walls,
When interest is your birthright, you could just accrue it all."

This line I interpret as defending multiculturalism --basically saying that if you're interested in an element of a different culture -for example, it's music- it's okay to explore that interest and it's not necessarily any kind of sinister 'appropriation (as some of their critics contend).'

"Heard codes in the melodies, you heeded the call,
You were born with ten fingers, and you're gonna use em all."

It's talking about a music journalist ('2006 little list-maker') using his 'ten fingers' to write a review.

The Dismemberment Plan – Rusty Lyrics 17 years ago
This song (like a few of the other ones on !) kind of gives me the creeps. It seems to be about this guy murdering a child, and his "nails encrusted in brown" are from his attempts to dig a hole to hide the body in. I don't know about deeper meaning though.

The Dismemberment Plan – The Face of the Earth Lyrics 18 years ago
Travis Morrison said that he wrote this after reading an interview with Michael Jordan, in which Jordan talked about how he'd been dating this girl for a few months, and they were at a beach house together and she drowned in the ocean. I guess Morrison was kind of grabbed by this idea of someone you don't really know all that well just disappearing from your life suddenly, and not necessarily feeling that sad about it. With someone you've only known for a little while, you can't really be sure how you're supposed to feel about it.

Or is it a brilliant parable for the September 11th terrorist attacks?

The Mountain Goats – Hand Ball Lyrics 18 years ago
Pretty crazy coincidence. I was in the middle of reading "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe, and I heard this song. He's basically just quoting what the Evil Forest spirit says in the book, although I'm not sure what the "I did not come to play hand ball" thing is about, but maybe it comes up later on in the book.
