Actually, the song is a play on Michelangelo's painting on the cieling of the Sistine Chapel (or Capella Sistina in Italian). In a famous part of the painting, two lovers are reaching out to each other, their index fingers almost touching. The song is about a love that could never come into fruition, recalling the hands of Capella Sistina that could never quite reach each other, leaving the lovers frozen in longing. So yeah, unrequited love, basically. |
