Dave Matthews Band – Don't Drink the Water Lyrics 18 years ago
Response to NewWaveWitch:

And our teacher described the Dave Matthews Band as the prime example of the carefree ignorance of the bourgeoisie. And here's why:

1) A white male dominating/fronting the band
2) They're songs speak from the upper class perspective. Wasting time, an entertaining non-constructive account of colonialism
3) They come straight out of South Africa. And if you know anything about Aparteid, then you can catch this.

*****

How can you agree with this?
Dave came from Africa... a country that isn't exactly high class.
Also, the drinking part is because Dave was a bartender. Hence "Bartender" and the lyrics of "Tripping Billies".
Also, he is saying he wants people to enjoy life while it lasts.

Dave Matthews Band – Don't Drink the Water Lyrics 18 years ago
I definitely agree with the idea that it could be "Don't drink the water" = "Don't believe what you learn in school." However, the rest of this song does not reflect the idea.

I personally believe the Native Americans/Western Expansion idea, as it best fits the song and what is present in VH1 Story Tellers.

One other idea is one that my English class looked at while reading Hiroshima. We compared the ideas of blood in the water with the polluted water after the atomic bombing, the "put your arms down" as America saying that there is no chance of winning, and several other ideas. In the book (and the real event of) Hiroshima, there are boats trying to ferry people away to rescue, but it is "leaving" because it is full, hence "Don't miss your boat, it's leaving now". The "Yes I will call this my home" and "Your horse is leaving" are among those that do not work here.

I do not think that the song is about Africa, because the ideas in the song so much better reflect the Native American story.
