I absolutely love this song, it's probably my favourite Counting Crows song. I believe this song is based on the book "Seven for a secret" by Mary Webb. Counting Crows songs often seem to have obscure literary references and this is no exception. I read the book years ago so I don't remember the plot exactly, but it goes something like this. The heroine of the story is in love with a boy, or he's in love with her, but before he gets to ask her to marry him, she is "taken advantage of" by a cruel man. He basically convinces her to sleep with him, but has no real relationship with her. Her family forces them to marry in case she gets pregnant (the book was written in the early 1900s). She isn't pregnant, though, and the boy who loved her doesn't stop loving her. I think in the end her husband dies and they get together. When you've read the book you can really see how the lyrics fit in with the story. The song is written in the perspective of her true love, and the poem about the crows is in the frontispiece of the book too (and the name is from the poem, obviously). The book is out of copyright and can be read in full by clicking the link at the bottom of this page: http://www3.shropshire-cc.gov.uk/intros/T000633.htm |
