Alison Violette – Follow Me Lyrics 7 years ago
The singer is asking whether her love will follow her on her life's adventure.
In the second verse, there are two motifs: the literal translation is saying that they will fly together, across the planet, and it will be a joy to call her love's name, no matter where (or what language is spoken where) they are. The more artistic (figurative) translation could be speaking of the great excitement of the adventures they are having.
In the third verse, she sings of having an adventure at home, job, kids, etc., as long as she's with her love.
In the fourth verse, she sings of the end of her days, going on the greatest adventure (dying).

Alison Violette – Complicated Lyrics 7 years ago
The song is about someone whose heart was broken (cheating?), but found another interest.
The first "turning around" was the singer, either bashful of advances, or trying not to be involved until she's healed from the previous relationship, hence why everything is complicated the first time.
The second verse speaks of a mature relationship, that she and her lover are becoming so close that they can finish each other's sentences, seemingly reading each other's minds, and no matter how far they are, physically, they are still feeling so close.
The third verse speaks of another heartbreak (cheating?), leading the singer right back to the beginning, though she's feeling stuck, unable to leave him.

@[Anesther:4274] Far too late, but I just came back here after a hiatus.
On the Neverender disc, the lyric is clearly "Like Jesus played Maker," though "martyr" is the ACTUAL lyric (from the lyric sheet).

Aranda – All I Ever Wanted Lyrics 11 years ago
It's okay. They're better at it from a rock standpoint; she's better from a pop standpoint. It depends on what you want.
Like someone told Billy Joel once, you might not be the best singer, but you are by far the best singer of YOUR songs.

Billy Joel – Movin' Out (Anthony's Song) Lyrics 11 years ago
You have to admit, it sounds sort of like it. I'm going with "Bathroom on the Right" mispronunciation and misunderstanding.
Not to mention, a "Sergeant O'Leary" who isn't whiter than snow is fairly unlikely.

Dream Theater – Blind Faith Lyrics 11 years ago
My realization of many Dream Theater songs is that they word their songs in such a way as to make you hear what you want. There are many ways to take this song (and others, like "The Great Debate").
Personally, I see this from a non-believer's perspective, but I can see a couple of ways to take it:
"But we do all that we can; Justify the means to an end" : We all do it, believer or not. Whatever end we want for ourselves, we try to justify why it's right for us (whether or not it might be right).
"Come Messiah, show us how" can be seen as a mocking plea from atheists or a genuine plea from believers.
"Sorry you must excuse me; I've painted my own Mona Lisa;
She's fixed everything; Now I'm spoiled beyond my wildest dreams" again can be seen as a person saying, "I'm free; look at this wonderful picture (of the world) I have constructed" - he may have broken free from a constricting religious belief or just realized his own version, not accepting the preacher's / his parents' / etc. as the One Truth (regardless of where the subject falls on the belief spectrum).
"Take your time and look around; Is this utopia you've found" could be a mocking jest at those whose exploitative beliefs are crushing the world around them (likely, given the next line; see also "Jesus He Knows Me" by Genesis), but it could be a moderate believer or non-believer seeing exploitation as immoral.

Overall, regardless of which way you take it, I see it as a condemnation of those who use faith to justify their cause without thinking of the consequences of their actions, especially those who (for instance) demand social programs be slashed from budgeting to fund military operations, despite their peacenik Messiah abhorring violence and telling people to help the poor, drop their possessions, and follow him.

Guster – Eden Lyrics 11 years ago
To me, this is about "coming out" with a Naturalistic worldview. This may have to do with Christopher Hitchens's recent death, or the crazy fundamentalist revival in The States, but it fits.
He says that "all that matters is what I see". All his detractors can "rattle off [their] talk," but it isn't going to change his mind.
"If [they] break [him] down", all they can fault him with is a "selfish desire", because they have nothing else with which to criticize him. Hence "desperate times call for desperate measures" and "I am not ashamed [of who I am]."
"It took me a long time [...] and I have chosen my path." He needs "them" to come to terms with it.
The revelations he's undergone will be seen by believers as lies, if he tries to explain them to the believers, so he (sarcastically?) tells them they can go back to their "truth".
He says "[he] could let [the believers] in", but they would need to set their feelings aside and look at it from a reasoning standpoint. "[He] only listens [to reason, to the spokespeople of atheism, agnostics, etc.]" because it helps his own peace of mind, not because it would actually "convert" anyone away from religion (he knows it wouldn't help break them away).
"I took a cane from a blind man" can refer to the usual radical atheist (thank Douglas Adams for that one) practice of trying to remove the crutch of belief from someone who can't see their life without it (blind) and doesn't see the world for what it is.
"And I've tasted the fruit in the Garden of Eden" can refer to the fact that he's gained knowledge that cannot ever allow him back into the Garden. He's seen the world in a much grander light, and can no longer believe.
"When I walk out of here, I know I'll stand clear": after arguing with this person, he'll keep his mouth shut...
"But the taste in my mouth still remains" but that doesn't mean the believer has won; he still has this "bad taste" from the former belief and though he may not complain directly, he can't ever go back to the way things were.

Guster – Barrel Of A Gun Lyrics 11 years ago
So, if you had to complete the lyric:
"Half dead, half numb;
She's enough to make me ___"
What would you put in? It would NOT have been "warm" (I was confused the first couple of times I heard it, AND they somewhat accent the word in the song, almost like "wum"). Likely, the word was "cum" / "come" (sing it once through with these words, I think you'll feel more musically satisfied). Hence the masturbation angle.
"Drip, drop, a lovely dream" is an obvious "wet dream" reference.
"Stay out; I'll stay in" is a bit like telling your housemates to go out without you, since you'll be home all night with the tissues

Guster – Either Way Lyrics 11 years ago
The idea is that you can't be in a competitive relationship; you need to give some of yourself up to "the team". "She" is still believing that it's either "he" who wins or "she" who wins. "She" still approaches the relationship with a competitive attitude, due to prior (bad) experience.

Guster – Two Points For Honesty Lyrics 11 years ago
Addiction? Wow, that's going a bit deep... Couldn't it just be about telling your parents (peers, etc) that you're an artist? Suddenly, you're confronted with the idea: "that's it? That's a waste of time."
He needs to not turn into the jaded and bitter "other" artists who "[...] Have seen it all before [, ... ] Already understand; Know they're right, done it right; could I get to be like that?" Could -- I -- become that jaded artist?

Dashboard Confessional – For You To Notice Lyrics 12 years ago
The 10th line (and same for the second time through) should read:

"But for now I'll look, so longingly;
Wait on,
[for you to...]"

He drags out "wait on" for a while, so it might sound like "waiting", but I'm positive.

Bill Pullman was first on Broadway in 2002, two years after the album came out, so no, it was not him.

Jeff Goldblum, however, was on Broadway in the 1970s and 1980s, but was not in many commercials.

Other likely candidates include Judd Hirsch, James Rebhorn, Randy Quaid, or Robert Loggia.
I have not seen the "You don't need a medical" commercials, though.

Disturbed – Criminal Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, it's about euthanasia. Someone who is in such pain and living in a world that is so vastly unjust and holds no place for them that they want to have another end it all.
The terminally ill are deemed criminals for wanting to end their own suffering.

"In a world that I don't want to know
With a message that I never want to send
To be free from all of this
I want you to quicken my end
Don't tell me I can not go
With the wound that refuses to mend
Deliver me from all of this
I want you to quicken my end"

I also see the beginning voice "malevolent criminal eye" as the people fighting to keep him alive calling him evil and amoral, saying he'll be damned to hell ("Cross the invisible line and you'll be paid in kind").

Maybe he's only --praying-- for his own death, but that's how I see it.

Barenaked Ladies – Wind It Up Lyrics 16 years ago
My theory with this being about marriage came mostly from the lyric "I can't believe that this is what people elope for." It seems like the singer is looking back over the short marriage that he's had and decided it was a bust.

Still, it seems that BNL is progressing through the idea of relationship. See above for my explanation.

Can't you hear this song blaring during some kidnapping scene on some show? Celeb is tied to a chair in a dark room, trying to escape her bonds and the killer/kidnapper comes out of the darkness and is trying to convince the celeb that this is all how it should be?
That would be really freaky and an intense scene...

Masturbation, maybe... Heroin, a little less likely, but without any confirmation from the band themselves...

Barenaked Ladies – Straw Hat And Old Dirty Hank Lyrics 16 years ago
Actually, Guster came out with a similar song, "Barrel of a Gun." I think that they took a lot of influence from BNL, and opened for BNL back for the Maroon tour around 2000/2001.

"Goddamn you, movie star
can't you play a minute more?
We'd be the best of friends,
you could stay here forever..."

Ascrodin - he can't hear you from three years ago... Likely that you can't hear me, either :)

BNL has gotten better lately, and they have been describing their transitions through their songs. It's true that you can't compare the Beatles and BNL, though, they are in completely different sports. It's like trying to compare Manchester United with the Boston Bruins (forgive me if you don't like either). They are each good at what they do, but they have somewhat different goals. BNL are a bunch of guys that just want to have fun and bring their music to the masses.

Barenaked Ladies – Bank Job Lyrics 17 years ago
I think that the "Wait by the phone" lyric is cleverly placed... Ed's singing about how when they're resting, the "robbers" should wait by the phone for further instructions.

Regardless of hidden messages or ulterior motives that BNL had in writing this one, I think that it shows that BNL has not lost their sense of humor and deserves props for any meanings we or they could come up with...

The Black Eyed Peas – My Humps Lyrics 17 years ago
As 25hourdays points out, maybe they were trying to point out that people shouldn't act this way, but by making their song a hit and not telling anyone that this was what they were trying to do, they have only reinforced the behavior.

Repost, thanks to shorty101help.

Alanis Morissette does a wonderful job of making the listener hear every single line and reflect on every word, to point out terrible holes in grammar, rhyming scheme and the fact that this song is nothing but smut. I heard 10 year-olds singing this in the mall. They have no idea what they are singing and it disgusts me.

Parents: Teach your kids about good music... Start with classical, it helps their brains develop and helps them learn.

Barenaked Ladies – Wind It Up Lyrics 17 years ago
Someone is over and done with their marriage, right?
I think that their "progression of life" through their albums is awesome.
Gordon dealt with high school and life around and slightly after college.
There are a great number of songs dealing with love and dating.
Stunt had "When You Dream," talking about their kids.
Maroon had "Tonight Is the Night..." which seemed awfully passive-aggressive in that there were some marriage tensions.
Everything to Everyone had "Have You Seen My Love", a tale of a man realizing that the woman he is with is not the woman he married (falling out of love).

Finally, we have "Wind It Up":
The divorce is in the works and the marriage is over.
In Glasgow on 9 April 2007, I saw BNL in concert (freakin' awesome, as ALWAYS). I noticed that Kevin was jamming this song a little more intensely than any other time that I have seen him. Could he have provided the story for this song as a release?

Barenaked Ladies – Aluminum Lyrics 17 years ago
I really think that this song is just about a person, but the 'Ladies really put in a lot of thought to make it as "aluminum foil"-y as possible...

Look at the extra verse from the live concerts:

Why should it come as a big surprise?
It's just an element of disguise
Even your emotions are anodized

Aluminum foil doesn't have emotions. Clearly they are talking about a person. And the line "You're not as precious as you contrive" shows that said person thinks they are hot stuff, but really have no substance, no real personality. I get the feeling of resentment all over this song...

BNL, I bow to your collective lyrical genius.
